Trees (Folk Rock)

In 1970, this British quintet released a couple of albums that made no bones about aping the approach of Fairport Convention (then at their peak). A mixture of traditional folk songs and originals, extended electric-guitar heavy arrangements, and a female singer who took many of the lead vocals -- it worked for Fairport. It didn't work as well for the Trees, for several reasons. First of all, Celia Humphris was no Sandy Denny, nor a Jacqui McShee (Pentangle), Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span), or even Judy Dyble (who sang with Fairport before being replaced by Denny). The Trees' original material (usually penned by Tobias Boshell) was more often than not pedestrian. And their arrangements, prone to plodding lengthy instrumental passages, were often way, way too long. The group broke up after two similar albums for British CBS, although they continued to play for a while in the early '70s with some personnel changes. Boshell, in an unlikely turn of events, joined Kiki Dee's Band, and wrote her biggest hit, "I've Got the Music in Me." ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

I really like Trees - I think it's a bit stupid to say music is bad because it sounds like other music? Celia Humphris has a weird, warbly voice, but it's not unpleasant. I like a lot of their tracks and it's a shame that they broke up before they had a chance to write more.
I think Humphris has a more traditional folk tone to her singing. Geordie demonstrates her traditional angelic folk quality very well.
They were OK. Not horrible. Not great. I think the review is an honest one.

I'm transported.
I love this band!
This is a recent development, Pandora--I remember you used to have the proper bio and discography for this band. I love heavy metal as well, but if I'm in the mood to listen to folk-rock, it's pretty jarring to have a metal band gumming up the works. (edit) Much better.

I love the Trees. Unfortunatel y , there is presently a heavy metal group called Trees, and Pandora fails to make the distinction. So in between amazing psychedelic folk, I get heavy metal. Please Pandora, make a distinction between these two bands.
Not all that bad ... thanks for including them.
love these guys.awesome stuff.I personally own both of these highly collectible L.P.s

Happy Birthday Tobias
No Jacqui McShee or, Maddy Prior, but she does have a Sandy Denny sound. :) No June Tabor either, but that's a little like condemning U2 for being no Beatles.

I'd rank Celia Humphris with Judy Dyble. Sure, definitely second tier, with say Hedgehog Pie. I'd pick up the music if one could buy it.

i was fooled. I thought is WAS Fairport Convention.
Super! I agree with dlogue. I like this a great deal. They are a Fairport sound-alike, but I find what I've heard here to be a touch more psychedelic, spacey, and ethereal than Fairport. I like it a great deal and also want to buy some. Neat Pandora discovery. It is sort of like Irish Folk meets Fairport Convention meets the Grateful Dead. It has a jammy quality akin to Fairport's Tam Lin or Sloth.
I find Trees very listenable, and think that at least the songs on here compare favorably with Fairport and Pentangle. In other words, I think the
appraisal on here is a little harsh. I'd buy this stuff.
