UFO

Vocalist Phil Mogg, guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way, and drummer Andy Parker formed the British space metal outfit UFO in 1969. Originally known as Hocus Pocus, the group, which took the name UFO in honor of a London club, debuted in 1971 with UFO 1. Both the album and its follow-up, the same year's Flying, found great success in Japan, France, and Germany, but went barely noticed in the band's native country; as a result, their third effort, 1972's Live, was released only in Japan.

In 1974, Bolton left the group; after brief trial runs with ex-Pink Fairies guitarist Larry Wallis and future Whitesnake member Bernie Marsden, former Scorpion Michael Schenker stepped in as a permanent replacement in time to record 1974's Phenomenon, which sported a harder-edged guitar sound. After 1975's Force It and 1976's No Heavy Petting brought UFO increased visibility with American audiences, keyboardist Paul Raymond joined for 1977's Lights Out. However, after 1978's Obsession, Schenker left the group, first to rejoin the Scorpions and later to form his own band. Despite the addition of guitarist Paul Chapman, the next UFO LP, No Place to Run, failed to match the success of its predecessors.

In 1982, the band released Mechanix, notching a minor U.S. hit with "Back into My Life"; later that year, Way exited to form Waysted and was replaced by ex-Eddie & the Hot Rods bassist Paul Gray. After 1983's Making Contact, UFO dissolved, only to re-form two years later for Misdemeanor; however, the album was met with little response, and they again called it quits. In 1993, the group's most popular lineup -- Mogg, Schenker, Way, Raymond, and Parker -- reunited and recorded the 1995 album Walk on Water; after a tour, the members yet again went their separate ways. Mogg and Way continued to work as Mogg/Way and released the albums Edge of the World (1997) and Chocolate Box (1999).

Schenker rejoined in 2000 along with veteran drummer Aynsley Dunbar for the two-CD Covenant, which featured one disc of new studio recordings along with one disc of live recordings. Sharks came out in 2002; then Schenker and Dunbar departed and were replaced by Vinnie Moore and Jason Bonham, respectively. This new band welcomed returning keyboardist Paul Raymond for 2004's You Are Here and 2005's live album Showtime. Bonham was the next to leave and was replaced by the band's original drummer, Andy Parker, for 2006's The Monkey Puzzle. The Visitor -- an album recorded without the participation of Pete Way due to the bassist's health problems -- followed in 2009. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

1st memory of this raw fabulous band is stopping my bicycle on a hot summer afternoon in Joliet, IL. while listening to a blaring speaker set up in an open, second floor bed room window ; screaming out Lights Out in London, sounds simply but I will never forget it! Great era, great band!!!
hadn't listened to them for years. popped ufo on the search page and wow. back in the groove again. as said before, i'd love to hear that early stuff that no one has heard. even they're great stuff is barely popular, so let's hear it!
Never heard of them until recently.

Strangers in the Night is a great record. It covers a ton of their music and carrys through many moods. I would say it's one of my favorite live records although nothing beats the original, studio version of Rock Bottom.
The guitar leads on "Strangers in the Night" we're speeded up when the album was mixed..

Michael certainly had a huge impact but look at his work after. Scorpions? Great. Other stuff? not so great. Phil Mogg was UFO for me. ( emphasis on for me) His vocals are exceptional and unique in a time when a lot of rockers loved to wail. He could sing.
dchavez04
Agreed, Michael was UFO

It always bothers me a little when Pandora does not include a band's pre success material. Would love it if Pandora included UFO 1 and UFO 2: Flying.
UFO's are fake if you believe in it you must still be 1 month old.
Michael was UFO
Alwayz a trooper of UFO Philosophy

So far ahead of there time saw them with rush it was out of this world
Not the right album
First concert experience was Foghat in Wichita 1976. The opening band was UFO and, although I'd never heard of them, they blew me away. Incredible live band! Bought every UFO album I could get my hands on and drove parents crazy turning it up to 11.
As their Bios says they were huge in Germany and that is where I was introduced to them in 74 and I was blown away by their music and shows. Michael Schenker done his best work with UFO. I have all their vinyl to include european bootlegs. UFO rocks.....Bu i l t for Comfort, Not for Speed....... . . . . . Y E A . . . . . . U F O

Fourth time I leave a comment. Can't help it. Their music just takes me back to the time in high school when I became relevant.
Strangers In the Night one of the best live albums ever

1980 Tucson, I'm Letting Go Now,and never stopped!
Saw UFO about 2 years ago - Phil signed my cooler for my son. Vinnie was awesome too. saw them in Londonderry NH - great show !!
First listened to their Lights Out album courtesy of my brother and was instantly hooked. I had never heard guitar quite like Schenker played it. Saw them live on the No Place to Run tour at St Paul Civic Center Theater. Many years later finally saw Michael Schenker live at a club in Tempe, AZ.

Dance Your Life Away is stuck in my head. Strange topic for a rock and roll song, but so what? I need to sample some more of these guys. Fine guitar work.

Here's a list of my all time favorite guitar riffs not necessarily in the order of which I think is best. 1) Rock Bottom 2) Stranglehold 3) Virgin Killer 4) Smoke on the Water 5) Wastde (Def Leppard).
Saw UFO the first time on Oct. 13th, 1978 at the Int. Amphletheatr e in Chicago. They recorded most of Strangers in the Night there. Myself and three buddies will relive that on Nov. 17th 2012-- 34 years later-- Can't wait

Great band...Aweso m e live. Much more than Schenker, Pete Way had a hand in Fastway and then formed Waysted, which is another great band.

saw them with J. Geils, Frank Moreno, and Journey at oakland coluseum in the late 70's and been a fan ever since
These are similar artists? I do consider UFO to be hard rock, but BS, JP and the Scorps are clearly Metal bands.
Definitely hard rock staple of my high school days in the late 70's. Michael Shenker definitely made them stars but Eddie Trunk must just be attached to them because of a soft spot for them in his past. He seems about my age and I understand this un-understan d a b l e mental condition.

great band!
First exposure to the band was in late 70's. Saw them live first in Dayton, Oh. - with Rush - long about 1978. UFO has remained one of my all-time favorites to this day, but as a friend would be quick to point out - only when it includes M.S. (have to agree). Good chemistry/so u n d with the early stuff. Phil Mogg still one of my favorites, with the few (all-time) vocalists I'd personally prop higher, being say, RJ Dio or B Halford . UFO radio on Pan dor a rocks. As to the most underrated
schenker is badass.

Best UFO album and Underrated Live album is Strangers in The Night!
Just saw MSG Saturday night at The Coachhouse in San Juan Capistrano. Robin McAuley's voice is still perfect. His covers of Scorpions songs unreal. Total pro. Shenker looks like Eddie from Iron Maiden now but ripped the guitar every song. Great show! Bunch of middle age guys in the audience (myself included) and had a lot of great conversation s regarding old days rock trivia. Last minute alert that they were playing and glad I went.
If you would have told me when I graduated high school in 1980 that 32 years later UFO would still be cranking out tunes I wouldn't have believed you. That said - I miss Schenkers guitar and Pete's bass. Another reunion would be great - but probably not in the cards.
do not understand eddie trunk's perpetual hard-on for this band.

rock bottom...... . B E S T hard rock song....hand s down!!!!!
