UFO

Vocalist Phil Mogg, guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way, and drummer Andy Parker formed the British space metal outfit UFO in 1969. Originally known as Hocus Pocus, the group, which took the name UFO in honor of a London club, debuted in 1971 with UFO 1. Both the album and its follow-up, the same year's Flying, found great success in Japan, France, and Germany, but went barely noticed in the band's native country; as a result, their third effort, 1972's Live, was released only in Japan.

In 1974, Bolton left the group; after brief trial runs with ex-Pink Fairies guitarist Larry Wallis and future Whitesnake member Bernie Marsden, former Scorpion Michael Schenker stepped in as a permanent replacement in time to record 1974's Phenomenon, which sported a harder-edged guitar sound. After 1975's Force It and 1976's No Heavy Petting brought UFO increased visibility with American audiences, keyboardist Paul Raymond joined for 1977's Lights Out. However, after 1978's Obsession, Schenker left the group, first to rejoin the Scorpions and later to form his own band. Despite the addition of guitarist Paul Chapman, the next UFO LP, No Place to Run, failed to match the success of its predecessors.

In 1982, the band released Mechanix, notching a minor U.S. hit with "Back into My Life"; later that year, Way exited to form Waysted and was replaced by ex-Eddie & the Hot Rods bassist Paul Gray. After 1983's Making Contact, UFO dissolved, only to re-form two years later for Misdemeanor; however, the album was met with little response, and they again called it quits. In 1993, the group's most popular lineup -- Mogg, Schenker, Way, Raymond, and Parker -- reunited and recorded the 1995 album Walk on Water; after a tour, the members yet again went their separate ways. Mogg and Way continued to work as Mogg/Way and released the albums Edge of the World (1997) and Chocolate Box (1999).

Schenker rejoined in 2000 along with veteran drummer Aynsley Dunbar for the two-CD Covenant, which featured one disc of new studio recordings along with one disc of live recordings. Sharks came out in 2002; then Schenker and Dunbar departed and were replaced by Vinnie Moore and Jason Bonham, respectively. This new band welcomed returning keyboardist Paul Raymond for 2004's You Are Here and 2005's live album Showtime. Bonham was the next to leave and was replaced by the band's original drummer, Andy Parker, for 2006's The Monkey Puzzle. The Visitor -- an album recorded without the participation of Pete Way due to the bassist's health problems -- followed in 2009. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Best UFO album and Underrated Live album is Strangers in The Night!
Just saw MSG Saturday night at The Coachhouse in San Juan Capistrano. Robin McAuley's voice is still perfect. His covers of Scorpions songs unreal. Total pro. Shenker looks like Eddie from Iron Maiden now but ripped the guitar every song. Great show! Bunch of middle age guys in the audience (myself included) and had a lot of great conversation s regarding old days rock trivia. Last minute alert that they were playing and glad I went.
If you would have told me when I graduated high school in 1980 that 32 years later UFO would still be cranking out tunes I wouldn't have believed you. That said - I miss Schenkers guitar and Pete's bass. Another reunion would be great - but probably not in the cards.
do not understand eddie trunk's perpetual hard-on for this band.

rock bottom...... . B E S T hard rock song....hand s down!!!!!

I always liked this band. Discovered them when I was living in Chicago in the late 70's, I guess that was their high-point as a band.
Great band, love the live album, got to see them in the seventies. High school wouldn't have been the same without them.

These Boys r BAD!!

Phil Mogg is one of my favorite singers of all time. Low octave, rich voice with a ton of soul.

Since my turntable has been vanquished to the closet I keep forgetting how great these guys are. "I'm a loser". What an awesome tune. Love "No Heavy Petting". This band was a high light for me when I was a kid. Any time they were listed on a tour I would buy tix only to see them cancel half the time. Lucky enough to have seen them at least three times between 76 & 79.
milosdad
1979 had Judas Priest, UFO and Axe. One of my all time favorite bands and one of my favorite singers in Phil Mogg. Love UFO 2 "Flying, One Hour Space Rock" as well.
slinger1022
Grew up with them in the 70's and 80's. Other than baseball, one of the rights of spring was UFO playing the Morris Civic Auditorium in South Bend, IN every March from '78 thru '83. God I miss those days...For pure melodic sound "TWTWATI" was by far their most outstanding album.
I still think Walk on Water is their best album. And I grew up in the 70's with Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out, Obsession, Strangers in the Night and No Place to Run. 40 years of ok to awesome albums and concerts. What a great catalog.
U.F.O.: Great studio music, better live band. Strangers In The Night (IMHO) is still one of the best live albums ever. Absolutely love Michael but he's proven to be one of his own worst enemies. Phil is simply one of the best vocalists, again awesome live band! No BS straight ahead rock & roll!
I agree Steven.....s o m e of the best hard rock muscicianshi p around!Schen k e r is one awesome guitarist and definitely a top 5 in my book. Phil Mogg's vocal clarity is unsurpassed and Paul Raymond was a versatile keyboard and guitar player.
UFO the most underrated rock band of all time
I always feel guilty that i don't listen to enough UFO. I played Strangers in the Night all summer long one year and just learned how to fake the main riff to Rock Bottom-sound s pretty close.
mustangfnmad m a n
loved ufo since i was a teen 1976 til now
dbrackvitch
Uriah Heep, not UFO, is Spinal Tap.
milosdad
You can find copies of "one Hour Space Rock" on E-Bay. Vinyl is pretty expensive but there are some cd copies.
Underappreci a t e d Hard Rockers!
Got introduced to these guys with Phenomenon, loved Schenker's melodic solos!
Spinal Tap
"LIGHTS OUT" that was THE UFO album.
Some cuts off their first 2 albums please (Prince Kajuku, Treacle People...)

I would love to find "one hour space rock" somewhere.Sa w them live at the TEMPLE in london in 72 outta sight
Oh, Michael Schenker, age has not been kind to you!
Etta James's bio is mix with the band UFO's discography, can somebody fix that????
"Few R&B singers have endured tragic travails on the monumental level that Etta James has and remain on earth to talk about it."

And apparently she did not. Remain on Earth, that is. A UFO took her away.
harryx.g.ben d t s e n
Etta James? So, was she abducted by a UFO or something?
Etta plays a mean guitar!
jmp235
Michael Schenker looks like hell in that picture. He looks like an old black lady! ;)
That's not Etta James.
That's a UFO, using a cloaking device.
kjkingrey
Nice pic and bio of crank-ho Etta James. If you get turned on listening to her sing, you have serious freakin freudian issues boy!
