Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep's by-the-books progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early '70s. Formed by vocalist David Byron and guitarist Mick Box in the late '60s, the group went through an astonishing number of members over the next two decades -- nearly 30 different musicians passed through the band over the years. Byron and Box were members of the mid-'60s rock band called the Stalkers; once that band broke up, the duo formed another group called Spice. Spice would eventually turn into Uriah Heep in the late '60s, once Ken Hensley (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and bassist Paul Newton joined the pair. Former Spice drummer Alex Napier was the band's drummer for a brief time; he was quickly replaced by Nigel Olsson.

Uriah Heep released their debut album Very 'eavy...Very 'umble (called Uriah Heep in the U.S.) in 1970. After its release, Keith Baker became the group's drummer; he recorded Salisbury, the group's second album, before deciding he couldn't keep up with the band's extensive touring and was replaced by Ian Clarke. Salisbury, featuring a 16-minute title track recorded with a 26-piece orchestra, showcased the band's more progressive tendencies. Later that year, Ian Clarke was replaced by Lee Kerslake and Mark Clarke replaced Newton; Mark Clarke quickly left the band and Gary Thain became the group's bassist. This lineup of Uriah Heep was its most stable and popular; beginning with 1972's Demons and Wizards, they released five albums between 1972 and 1975.

After 1975, the band's popularity began to slip. Byron left the band in 1977 and was replaced by John Lawton, yet the group's fortunes kept declining right into the early '80s. However, Uriah Heep soldiered on, continuing to release albums into the '90s and 2000s. The album roster included Different World (1994), Sea of Light (1995), Sonic Origami (1998), and Spellbinder (1999). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Great Band!!, Pandora is missing a lot of history. Pandora's info is a lot like Yahoo's news

One of the bands that influenced me in my early days!! We used to use
Stealin' as an encore tune when we toured!!! A band where the whole was truly greater than the sum of the parts!!!!
Great under ground music acid rock
Great band! F the critics!
You will find Heepsters the most loyal in the world!
Uraih 197ch Germany
I choose this Band over my job , No regrets , even picked up a hitch hiker on the turnpike . I know ~!~ not smart . but I had a car load , i was safe . It was one of those Kansas thunder storms . where the rain makes you pull over . We had a blast . however ! The storm and the fact that the band got Juiced while waiting for power . It felt more like partying with the boys , than a concert . fun times ~~!!~~ ..Leaders of the time , yet no one got it !! Just US few ~!!~
and Gaty Thain played woodstock with Keef Hartley!

Don't blame the people at pandora, they're not the ones who write the biographies and lyrics, they usually get them from various websites. Though, they could also find a source with more accurate info...

I got to say pandora really sucks at times. Not only do they make mistakes with the lyrics that are criminal, but they even get the history wrong. The last album gary Thain played on before his death is not even mentioned or in the files which was the album that had the big hit Sweet Freedom on it. It just makes me wonder who are the people they get their fcats from ?? The fact David Byron left after just one more album also should make this album important enough to be mentioned !!
Love them Roger Dean album covers !!
Saw them live in 71' 72' one of the best rock bands ever !
Yes underrated for sure!
Uriah Heep was one of my favorites as a teen and onward...at 15 I got to go to their party after at the motel where they rented out the entire floor...was it ever wild but oh so much fun!
alohakghi
It seems a lot of people did not get the warlock, wizard, magical themes of this band. It might also have affected the constant personnel changes. The lead singer has a very pleasant timbre and quality to his voice that has kept me interested in them for years.
i could see This Is Spinal Tap being based on this band. Welcome to the sex farm. lol
BEST MEMORIES
Oh, the memories……

Sweet Lourain
"Circle of Hands" is a classic tune!

The most rock & metal stations on Pandora Radio!
They still put on a stellar live show!
Where is The Magician's Birthday? I don't see it in the discography and it, to me, was one of their better albums.
Stealin!they wereso wasted in south bend in 77 the bassist fell of his stool because he already had a broken leg in a full cast
garyzoet
One of my all time favorites. Everything up until Wonderworld. Saw them in Nurnberg in '74 or '75 and it is still one of my all time favorite concerts. i think it was Sweet Freedom. it was awesome.
I remember them on the radio in the 70's. Flashbacks of dancing in my room.
Uriah Heep was my favorite band of the 70's No song sounded the same. A perfect blend of music with great vocals & harmony.
David Byron died of alcohol related complication s , including liver disease and seizure, what a waste
Good sounds

this song is cool. love D&W and grew up on Look at yourself. School music teacher plyed t to us in 1975 in South Africa! Whoa! ultra conservative and we were looking at ourselves ...
Demons and Wizards is what got me hooked on Uriah Heep back in the early 80's and is the best Uriah Heep album of all time top to bottom every song is great!!!!!!

i remember tripping so heavily on 4 way lsd at the Grande in Detroit sitting in the balconey...g o t the urge to pee so I thought I would go downstairs to the mens room.the chaps in the first row on the balconey had their hands full ,saving my life,as I was going to go over side to bathroom. For t u n a t e l y I came to my senses and went to back of balconey and found the stairs...saw Uriah Heep, also JETHro Tull with a local band...might have been the Frost. But was way too messed up.......
1st Concert I ever attended in Chicago was Uriah Heeps Look at Yourself Tour.

lorraineales i a
i have truly 3 top bands in my life :Pink Floyd,Supert r a m p and Hurriah Heep!

Lee Kerslake is one of the most underrated drummers in rock. Love Gary Thain's bass (kind of think of him as the Keith Moon of bass...all over the place). UH Live is still one of my all-time favorites.
GREAT GREAT band an all time favorite!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Not surprising, 'The Magicians Birthday is not listed in the Selected Discography because it has some of my favorite Uriah Heep songs.
elewolf
Great band been following them since mid 1970's have lps cassettes and cd,s sad that more people don't know of them
uriah heep is everything deep purple wish they were------va s t l y underated
My buddy Rolan Littlefield was a big fan of Heep. Since he left town it got hard to dig into them. That was 1973 as I recall. Other dudes could play Demons and Wizards but without ol' Rol it just wasn't the same.
jrob53
Saw then at least 3 times in the early 70s great band. As stated before one of the most forgotten bands of them time. I was playing in a group that did several Heep songs we audutioned a new guitar player and the first thing he did was rip off some heep. He was hired and after that we did a whole set of Heep
first heard UH at 15 Salisbury had to buy the first album fan ever since
Heeps new music still ROCKS...2012
