Vanden Plas

Formed in 1990, German progressive metal band Vanden Plas combined the creativity of progressive rock with the aggression of metal and the vivid dynamism of the theater in their live performances (all of the band's members had roots in the latter). Their lineup has been consistent from the beginning. Consisting of Stephen Lill on guitars, Torsten Reichert on bass, Andreas Lill on drums, Andy Kuntz on vocals, and Günter Werno on keyboards, Vanden Plas issued a great many singles in the '90s -- in that same decade they issued three full-length albums and an EP, all of which became increasingly more adventurous and innovative and helped build their European fan base.

Their first full-length album, the self-produced Colour Temple, came out in 1994 and featured a straight-ahead metal style that highlighted Lill's guitar playing. That album would eventually be reissued by two other labels, giving the band more exposure and moderate commercial success. With their next album, the EP AcCult, they went in a completely different direction, making an entirely acoustic album that contained four fascinating covers, including Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" and "Kayleigh" by Marillion. The album was a critical success and gave Vanden Plas the mandate to be even more creative with their next album, 1997's The God Thing. That album ventured off into prog-metal territory, combining Lill's great guitar arcs with heavily orchestrated sections, showing a heavy Dream Theater influence. Continuing in the same tradition was their 1999 release (on Inside Out Music America in the U.S.) Far Off Grace, which was followed in 2000 with a mid-priced live album, Spirit of Live.

Beyond Daylight was next, arriving in 2002 and showing the group growing into a more experimental and technically difficult outfit. That same year, various members of the band as well as Pink Cream 69 and Silent Force collaborated on the rock opera Missa Mercuria. In 2003, Kuntz formed a group (Abydos) to cut a solo album entitled The Little Boy's Heavy Metal Shadow Opera About the Inhabitants of His Diary, then went on to play the role of Judas in a touring musical production of Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2006, Vanden Plas released Christ 0, a concept recording based on Alexander Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo. It proved to be the band's breakthrough in Europe and Japan. They toured behind the recording for a full two years, creating a performing musical out of it in 2008. In 2010 the band re-emerged with The Seraphic Clockwork on Frontiers, another concept recording. Its protagonist, who is in 16th century Rome, has a vision that binds him through a spell to an Old Testament prophecy. He is required to travel back to Jerusalem in 33 AD to face his ordained destiny.

After touring, Vanden Plas were absent from the recording scene for another four years, though they were working on something grander than anything in their previous catalog. When they returned in 2014, it was with the opening album in a multi-record cycle. Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld (Path 1) was based on the book series by German sci-fi and fantasy author Wolfgang Hohlbein (who also wrote some of the album's lyrics). Regarded by many European critics as one of the prog-metal albums of the year, it sought to tell the story of a vampire's search for his secret European origins. Greek, Germanic, and Norse myths and histories were its inspirations. Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld, Pt. 2 was released a little over a year later in the fall of 2015. ~ Stacia Proefrock

A great melodic prog metal band that gets better with each new release. Their last two albums IMO stack up well against DT's best work. I hope they continue on this trajectory.

Absolutely awesome singer! Way better than James Labrie and one of the best I've heard in prog metal (Russel Allen still number one).

This album is based on the count of monte cristo

Tragically under liked. Cmon people.

Christ O. means good music

What does the Christ 0 mean don't tell me there one of these anti God lunatics !

Vanden Plas is the closest to Dream Theater I've found (with a solid argument for Redemption) but with a little more of an 80's shred edge vs. pure prog like DT. Absolutely love them!

Hey Ray3319, I love James Labrie, but I must agree with you that DT with Andy would be something... Amazing.
Report as inappropriate
Imagine Dream Theater with that singer .. that would make the best band that ever lived (Even if DT already is ...)

There really good and Bosephus Yuletide saying that it's almost a good thing the the singer is a athiest...me and my friends were reading this at the same time and laughed...at h i e s t s are so stupid...sor r y God !

wish they would put the Seraphic Clockwork album on here. it's amazing

Awsome band, any newer music than from 2006?

great band--love it. but let's not get carried away...dream theater is the zenith of prog metal and always will be...a few groups come close, and i agree this is one, but DTs songwriting is impossible to match. the closest i have heard is circus maximus.

Great band. Really, more interesting than Dream Theatre, which of late has gotten rather cliche despite the musicianship of the individual members (but ditch the vocalist guys!). I really enjoy Vanden Plas--balanc e between metal intensity and virtuosity. A thousand thumbs up!!
I'm still on of the same mind--DT was the zenith, but they're too predictable. And they need a new singer badly--that' s the problem. VP has harder edge. Love it!

Phenomenal. It's diffiult to find a group who knows a good balance between the intensity of metal and the musicianship of progressive rock. These guys could be like the next Dream Theater, only with a little mor metal influence.

Christ O is the perfect CD. Incredible. I can't wait for Seraphic Clockwork. I wish they would tour over
here. These guys are excellent musicians. One of the best bands around.

Pandora really needs to get Far Off Grace and Beyond Daylight, and pick up The Seraphic Clockwork when it comes out in two weeks.

"Christ O" ROCKS! :-))

We need to get the stupid homeland security department to let these guys into the US for once.

While there are religious influences, Vanden Plas is not a Christian band. Andy Kuntz (lead singer and lyricist) is an atheist. Their song "Father" is essentially an atheist prayer.
Report as inappropriate
This is Christian Prog metal from Germany? WOW! That makes their music even more interesting and therefore more impressive.
Report as inappropriate
I love this band to pieces. So much depth in their music. Christ 0 was a killer album, beginning to end. Very Dream Theater-like at times, but that's not a bad thing at all.

In fact, I've gotten a lot of Dream Theater fans interested in Vanden Plas!
Report as inappropriate
Christians can be BAD A**, too.
Report as inappropriate
They seem to have some christian influence in the lyrics... I'm not religious, but hell I don't immediately rule out a band because they choose to be. Very talented! \m/
Report as inappropriate
An incredible mix of talent making a whole more than the sum of its parts. I really love their sound. I love the fullness of the production. This Band is haunting and intelligent. We need more Music such as this in the "mainstream" ! Great Band

Vanden Plas is still pretty impressive though. :)

Odinscross69 : I beg to differ. Metropolis Pt. 2 is much more complex and not even the most complex of DT's work. Who else could pull off a 24 minute song (Change of Season) and manage to keep our attention?
Report as inappropriate
the_cadaver
Pretty damn good, not too abstract to the point where the song loses you. Just enough to take ya for a ride.
Report as inappropriate
is this about Vanden Plas or Dream Theater? lol

Vanden Plas' Christ 0 is better than anything D.T. ever put out!!
Report as inappropriate
Listening to 'Christ 0'. Appears to be well orchestrated . Similar to DT's days with Kevin Moore. I've worked with John, Mike, and Jordan at music clinics individually ; and with John and Mike together. Although Vanden Plas has some great chops on this tune, DT is still unmatched for musical arrangement, technical execution, and overall collaboratio n as five exceptionall y talented musicians with an unparalleled ability for total recall of their spectacular mathematical time signatures.

Vanden Plas is my second favorite band behind the masters, Dream Theater. They are the closest thing I've found to Dream Theater's talent and technical ability so far. If you like progressive metal I don't think it get's much better than Vanden Plas.

i forgive Andy Kuntz' nasalness for the masterpiece that is Abydos. If you dont own this album kick yourself and then go buy it.

A great band. I hope they continue to make songs.

Woooosh ! What a marvelous band ! Vocalis has superb voice quality. Keyboardist is Master of subtle magnificence - t h e i r music is has astonishing time canges and syncopations . Guitarist is true shredder. Their preoccupatio n with the Divine is interesting also.

This band rocks! Love the harmony in the vocals!

The description naming Dream Theater as an influence into their prog metal musings is an interesting one. I'm sitting here listening to Christ 0, and am thoroughly enjoying it, and I'm a HUGE fan of DT, Petrucci, Rudess, etc.

This cut is excellent on its own, DT comparisons aside.
Report as inappropriate
Hey, I'm fine as long as they aren't comparing it to DF...if you know what I mean.

I've only heard a few songs from these guys, but I can tell that they know how to write a good song.
Report as inappropriate
too many comments here comparing VP with DT. they are both great bands. DT is more adventurous with their compositions which doesnt always pay off. VP is more traditional in their compositions and definitely more consistent. Its a pity their best album 'Beyond Daylight' is not on Pandora yet.

dbender8
Amazingly good but DT has been and will always bee the answer!
Report as inappropriate
Are the lyrics all sung in German on their albums?
Report as inappropriate
They are good, but DT is other deal, on opinion no band can touch DT!
Report as inappropriate
A unique voice in the genre.
Report as inappropriate
Sweet!! Pettrucci is definitely safe though. They may kick a**, but they can't touch Dream Theater, especially since they are technically just using D.T.'s formulas for Prog metal.
Report as inappropriate
They blow me away!!!
