Victor Wooten

Bassist Victor Wooten began his musical career early. At age three, his brother Regi taught him to play bass, and at age five he made his stage debut with his four older brothers in the Wootens, playing songs by R&B mainstays like James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, War, and Curtis Mayfield. After playing regional tours and opening for acts like Mayfield and War, the Wootens recorded an album in 1985. However, the record received little commercial or critical response, and eventually the Wooten Brothers found other gigs. By 1988, Victor Wooten moved to Nashville to join a rock band, and the following year met Béla Fleck, the banjo player for New Grass Revival. Fleck was forming a jazz group to appear on a TV show; he recruited Wooten, his brother Roy on drums, and Howard Levy on keyboards and harmonica. As the Flecktones, the group earned numerous accolades, including four Grammy nominations and a number one album on the jazz charts.

As the '90s progressed, Wooten added a solo recording career and numerous collaborations to his duties in the Flecktones. Along with solo albums like 1996's A Show of Hands and the following year's What Did He Say?, Wooten contributed to albums by friends like David Grier, Paul Brady, and Branford Marsalis' Buckshot LeFonque. His third solo album, Yin-Yang, which featured appearances by Fleck, Bootsy Collins, and the Wooten Brothers, was released in 1999. Live in America from 2001 documented four years on the road in a double-disc package. After tours with the Flecktones and a 2001 release/tour with the group Bass Extremes, Wooten returned to his solo career in 2005 with the album Soul Circus. Released in 2008, Palmystery included turns by violinist Eric Silver and harmonica player Howard Levy. ~ Heather Phares

Victor is a cool guy and a amazing bass player I met him last night at a friends house for her party. It was so cool to hear him play there. He taught my friends dad to play and he's a good friend of there's and that how I got to meet him. But I think the coolest part is when I to perform with him there.my fav song that he did there was "me and my bass guitar"

To AUtopsy Stanley along with Larry Graham and Jaco (along with some others) set the table for modern Jazz fusion Bass playing. You wouldn't have a Victor Wooten without these guys I'm sure he would be the 1st to tell you that. If I was a bass player (I'm a guitarist) these guys along with James Jamerson, Duck Dunn Louis Jordan and a few others is where I would start. Victor is where I would finish!

I used to think Stanley Clark was the end all of bass players. I've seen Victor twice in the last 2 months, with Bella, and there will never be another like him. Stanley, sit down.

Victor puts more soul in his playing than many players, and that's is truly what makes him great. HIs creative syncopated rhythms never get old, and are truly beyond inspiring. He is argueably the best bass player ever. Keep it up Wooten!

Got to see Mr. Wooten play and do a little Q & A at a music store in SW Missouri back in the nineties. It was killer. I'm surprised the damn thing still works when he's done with it.

I think the All Music review by Heather Phares for Victor does him no justice. We all know its "only the bass", but he is an icon on the instrument, as influential as was Jaco Pastorius or Jimi Hendrix (for gutarists..) . The review doesnt even go there at all!! It just shows she really doesnt know who he is and that All Music should have jazz experts reviewing jazz musicians. I am a bass player of 35 years, for the record.

This guy is a freak of nature. I'll be seeing him with the Flecktones at Motor City Casino on Thursday!!!

Saw Victor with The Flecktones around 15 times. He is like having 4 or 5 bass players at the same time . I agree with bssmn71 below . Basses also make good firewood.

Had the chance to see him live with the Flecktones. Truly a moving experience. Made me want to use my bass as a coffee table because it just doesn't get any better, or even close to , to him.
As a side note, check out some of the stuff he did with Steve Bailey. Definitely worth a listen.

There are no words that desribe how truly awe inspiring Victor's musicianship is. Whether live or on recordings his talent is evident to all but the truly dead. Deaf people can groove with this, 'cause you don't just listen, you FEEL !!!!!
