Vio-Lence

San Francisco's Vio-Lence were one of the late arrivals to the '80s thrash metal party, and while they bore all the regular sonic traits of the genre, they never really had the chance to develop in the short time allotted to them.

Formed by guitarist Robb Flynn after his departure from fellow Bay Area thrashers Forbidden, Vio-Lence also featured vocalist Sean Killian, guitarist Phil Demmel, bassist Dean Dell, and drummer Perry Strickland. Heavily influenced by thrash pioneers Exodus, the band often chose raw aggression over the more technical style of peers like Death Angel and Forbidden. Despite Killian's vocal shortcomings (the singer seemed incapable of keeping up with the rest of the group's frenetic pace), the band's 1988 debut Eternal Nightmare had more than its share of bright moments. This couldn't be said for their mostly lackluster 1990 follow-up, Oppressing the Masses, nor 1991's Torture Tactics EP, however, and the band fell apart after the recording of 1993's Nothing to Gain.

Robb Flynn would quickly resurrect his career with a new band -- the well-received Machine Head, while Demmel and Dell would go on to form Torque. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

They're nice until u 'resist' arrest. Then they're not so nice... When there's 5 of em beating the s**t out of u...with sticks!

The description is a little bit wrong. Vio-Lence were already a band when Robb Flynn left Forbidden. After he left, he joined Vio-Lence.

the jerk who wrote the above bio is writing about something he knows not. vio-lence were not late comers to the thrash scene and seans vocals are brutal and honest oppressing the masses was well received and better produced then eternal nightmare. they dissolved when they made a rookie mistake in their choice of management. they switched when they should of stayed. period. machine head cant measure up to vio-lence

vio-lence also has some of the most rabid fans around, if they were to play a show near sf i know that show would be sold out fast, we would come out from woodwork to attend

Who writes these bio's? F**king Ignorance! This band was a local legend in the Bay Area. Also Rob Flynn DID NOT form the f**king band.

Vio-lence was an American thrash metal band formed in 1985 in the San Francisco Bay Area. They released demo tapes, one EP and 3 LPs between 1985 and 1993. Their most stable line-up was Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn on guitars, Deen Dell on bass, Perry Strickland on drums and Sean Killian on vocals. Get it right Pandora, You are from the f**king bay.

Sean killian is awesome and oppressing the masses was a freaking sick album

I started this station in 06 and added Vio-lence immediately, it has taken them 7 years to start playing my addition. It did occasionally play the last album but it was mostly unlistenable . Better late than never

I agree with the comments about the bio but really, what do you guys expect? Pandora has long been plagued by a horrible staff. The write-ups are just the tip of the iceberg. Most ironically, the author of the bio praises EN and calls OtM and TT lackuster but well the only album they have is the lackluster OtM/TT CD. Best to just listen to the music and not get all bent out of shape about it. That's what the like/'dislik e buttons are for,

Exactly!

I just heard Gutterslut for the first time on Pandora and it's about time. Horrible Bio, i think this guy also writes for Yahoo news which is equally atrocious.

f**k you! oppressing the masses was the s**t! u no nothing

Exactly, hiimjray. Fact checking doesn't seem to matter to Pandora.
( JC I LOVE Oppressing The Masses! )

The Clown who did this "write-Up"? Needs to pull it, Go do Some Research then Re-Write with Facts! Vio-Lence deserves more Respect then this! Robb started Vio? Sean Couldn't keep up with band? Torture Tactics & Oppressing, Lackluster? STRIKE 1, 2 And 3! Get Your Facts straight, especially with such an important and respected band as VIO-LENCE!
Report as inappropriate
Love Vio-Lence! But I thought it was basically Demmel & Strickland's creation, then they snagged Flynn from Forbidden...

Vio-lence is Hall of Fame Thrash. 2 of the best albums ever are Eternal Nightmares and Oppessing the Masses. Too bad they could have a long discography like some others, but then the others had some s**tty records as well.
VIO-LENCE RULES!!!!

Vio-Lence simply kicked a**! Oppressing the Masses is an amazing CD.
Someone should take Ed behind the woodshed and beat him senselessly.
What a dumbass! His posting is ancient now. Someone needs to wake the hell up and update this properly. Robb and Phil have been destroying everyone with Machine Head for years now!

They were apart from their thrash peers, you morons. I agree with Lauren, you need to change this!

ED you are 100% wrong, Vio-Lence was not formed by Robb Flynn. You should really change this. Sean's vocals were never a short-coming , although some people never like his vocal style, Sean's vocals were great and he had the greatest stage presence of all Thrash period.

In the late 80's this ws the s**t! You knew at a Violence show it was balls to the wall thrash. No mushy f**king ballads no trendy s**t other than the trend of thrash. Killians vocals were never a shortcoming as mentioned above, that was the style, it separated them from the rest. He was as much a part of what set them apart as anything. I miss them dearly.
