Viva Voce

Kevin Robinson (drums) and Anita Robinson (vocals/guitars) formed the indie rock outfit Viva Voce in their native Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in 1998. Viva Voce (pronounced VEE-vah-VOH-chay) is the Italian definition for "by word of mouth." Hooray for Now marked the husband-and-wife duo's first album before the year's end. Headlining club dates and performing support gigs for Sunny Day Real Estate followed into 1999. As they developed their guitar-driven indie pop, Viva Voce left their Southern abode for Portland, Oregon, in 2002, and there Viva Voce founded the Amore!Phonics label as a means of distributing the band's earlier material. A sophomore effort, Lovers Lead the Way, appeared the next summer. Dates with Calexico, Ladybug Transistor, and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci also coincided with its release. Around this time, west coast radio stations such as Seattle's KEXP and KCRW in Los Angeles caught on to Viva Voce's inventive pop sound, and again championed Viva Voce's atmospheric sound in progress. Heat Can Melt Your Brain, the band's first release for Minty Fresh, arrived in summer 2004. North American and European tour dates in support of that record followed into the end of 2005. Fall shows with Silversun Pickups matched the September 2006 release of Viva Voce's fourth album, Get Yr Blood Sucked Out. It marked their first release for Seattle's Barsuk Records. Their second was 2009's Rose City. Viva Voce returned in 2011 with their sixth studio album and Vanguard label debut, The Future Will Destroy You. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

I still have their very first album.

They're from Alabama? Sorry Tide. Ok then. They get better with every song I hear.

Where have I been? This is a very good band(duo). I agree Brenda Gonzalez - great tunes.

Great tunes

I like them. That's all I have to say.

I liked Eye in the Sky until the guy started doing the fake plastic megaphone voice, then it became goofy and detracted from the song.

I love Viva Voca!

'Never Gonna be Like Yesterday' - Reminded me of Modest Mouse.

From the Devil Himself is a great song. Has a cool Mammas and the Pappas meets the Monkees vibe.

Their remake of 'Eye in the Sky' is greatness.

This band rips. It's like Broadcast and Yo La Tengo went on a date to tha studio, was held up at gunpoint, and was forced to make a record.

They came before the white stripes!
Who cares anyways.

if anything they sound like Yo La Tengo...but in a good way. They are nothing like the White Stripes!
Report as inappropriate
I am not quite sure how they are a ripoff of White Stripes.
Report as inappropriate
You know what if they can rip off the White Stripes and do a better job at it who cares it's still good music. It doesn't change the fact that they are talented.
Report as inappropriate
These guys sound nothing like White Stripes. They're both two-piece bands, and they both consist of a man and a woman; that's about where the similarities end. Get over it.

Just wonderful music and really great people. I met them at a gig in cincy awhile back. Get all their stuff. Nothing disappoints.
Report as inappropriate
I'm pretty sure that I saw them in the late 90's at a high school auditorium.. . never heard of them after that until now. Really awesome stuff though!

Good music. The singer, Anita, reminds me of a Veruca-Salt esk sound. Good rythm, and easy tune to remember. Rockin guitar. Thumbs up. First time I have ever heard them. Pretty good listening.
