These guys are DEEP! The entire album that this song is from is not just one of the greatest reggae albums but one of the greatest albums in all music in general.
This band should have as much recognition as Marley, but unfortunatel y the majority of my fellow Americans are imbeciles.
God bless The Wailing Souls

Obviously Sublime covered this song. They also cover "steppin razor" by peter tosh

sublime steals or "covers" music. the difference between sublime and say puff daddy is puff daddy actually pays and sites the originator of the music. Sublime steals and does not respect who they stole from. Thiefs. Brad whoever is hot trash

wow, quite a lot of haters on here. thanks for the info Jo-el Clark.
look, much respect to brad and sublime, but they covered the hell out of a lotta songs. dont hate on these guys for providing melodies that influenced bradly and sublime. i mean, "what i got" came from a beatles song. War Deh Round A John Shop was recorded in 1984.

A lil research goes a long way...

"Influenced by "War Deh Round a John Shop," Sublime altered the Wailing Souls song and renamed it Pawn Shop."

The dude who said he is glad Brad died better protect his neck. Come say that s**t in Austin Texas where I can hear it and I will stomp a mud hole in your b**ch a**. "Believe me when I say that I got something for his punk a**"!. Apologies go out to everyone for my violent tone, everyone but that punk b**ch. RIP Brad

this is a big shocker to me right now...i know that sublime covered lots of songs....but i thought Pawn Shop was an original...d a m m i t sublime!

both versions sound great. RIP Bradley

Ripping off another artist sucks, even if you like the one who does the rip off. Music evolves from people influencing eachother but anyone ripping off another artist and not crediting them sucks a** forever imo.
Report as inappropriate
its flesh n bone hahaha, no doubt Brad just fully ripped this off, classic, and then made it his, first time hearing this and a huge Sublime fan since forever, this is good, I always loved this song so its good to hear where he pulled it from, tis great
Report as inappropriate
I'm pretty sure Wailing Souls couldn't rip off Sublime...se e i n g how Pawn Shop was released, oh, about 12 years after Wailing Souls. Don't get me wrong, I still like Pawn Shop better...
Report as inappropriate
Please... Sublime "ripped off" more reggae artists than you know.

I think the wailing souls ripped off sublime on this one. And sublime "knows because of krs-one". So do I. Sublimes' song makes much more sense to me, probably because I am a whitey. Are the wailing souls talking about a war around a brothel?

Hynsupafly, Have some respect for the dead you ignorant B**tard!!

Its called Dub....Dub-a * *
Report as inappropriate
apparently hynsupafly doesn't listen to a lot of old school reggae. you will hear the same beats recycled throughout a whole lot of reggae artists. it's not stealing at all. whether you want to call it borrowing, stealing, whatever.... . it's been going on since the beginning, in all different genres of music. and besides... if it sounds good, who really cares who made the s**t up?
Report as inappropriate
hynsupafly, yes you have the freedom of speech to say what you want, but what you said crossed a line. I personally knew Brad and the entire Sublime crew very well and we all still feel the loss. Brad was a good person and his death was a tragedy. I dearly miss listening to Brad just jam on the guitar and make up his own lyrics to my favorite reggae beats. Learn to enjoy music for what it is...artists are influenced by other artist...tha t ' s what makes music so interesting.

i hate how sublimes sorry a** band steals real reggae music. Yes people in rap usually make remakes and mixes of older music but they PAY for the rights. sublime does not. glad that dude died

This one got me, but if you're a fan of reggae, you can find almost every sublime song prior to it being a sublime song
Report as inappropriate
the wailing souls version was the original, released in 1984. but agreeing with neto916, it's not ripping off, tons of well-known bands do obscure covers, paying homage to their influences. what other band but sublime would sample works from the likes of the grateful dead ("scarelet begonias"), 40's jazz great charlie parker ("summertime " , whose death ironically was also contributed to heroin), the beastie boys, and other great reggae artists like toots & the maytals and the melodians.

Love both of them....
Report as inappropriate
interesting. . . , I had the same questions. I like both versions for their similairitie s / d i f f e r e n c e s . Thanks for the input
Report as inappropriate
Bradley was no doubt music conscious not only in reggae but obviously in rap and couple other genres which are easily heard in his music, he did tons of covers, mixes and meshes of these genres... I don't call it ripping off, its just taking influences and bringing them together like never before, which gave Sublime their unique songs and set them apart.

one of them clearly ripped off the other, very curious to whom it was
Report as inappropriate
bradley from sublime was a huge wailing souls fan and probably a good friend, i'll bet wailing souls produced it first and brad used the bass and guitar soon after. most sublime songs are covers, variations, and dubs of other songs, call it a version. Jah Blessings

This song was also performed by a ska/rock group called "Sublime". Which is the original?
Report as inappropriate
Yeah I'm confused too. Dont know who ripped who...
