Yellowjackets

Although sometimes grouped with Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets are actually one of the most creative regular groups in the "rhythm & jazz" genre. Founded in 1981 as an R&B-oriented band that starred guitarist Robben Ford, the group took a giant step forward when, after Ford's departure, altoist Marc Russo took his place. With original members Russell Ferrante on keyboards and electric bassist Jimmy Haslip, in addition to drummer William Kennedy, the band found its own R&B-ish sound, sometimes playing original compositions that sounded like Joe Zawinul at his most melodic. Starting out on Warner Bros. in the early '80s, Yellowjackets moved to MCA/GRP in 1986, where they released a string of well-received albums. In the '90s, Russo chose to go out on his own, and his replacement, Bob Mintzer (on tenor and bass clarinet), added more jazz credibility to the group's music. They moved back to Warner Bros. in 1995 for several albums before moving to the Heads Up label for the live two-CD set Mint Jam in 2002. Their first studio album in five years, Time Squared, was released in 2003. Three years later, the band celebrated its 25th anniversary as an ensemble with the release of the live album Twenty Five. The studio album Lifecycle followed in 2008. In 2011, the band marked its 30th year with the release of Timeline on Mack Avenue. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

I like the yellowjacket s just fine and Robben Ford also for that matter but jeez, Pandora seems to be pushing them awfully hard today..... its like all my stations are dripping in honey!...... . . . (i know,,,,coul d n t resist tho)
@Rodney Alan Crawford- I never knew Ricky Lawson played with the jackets... thank you
This is a band I need to hear more of. I have listened to them in the past and they didn't do anything for me. Surprising, because I usually like almost anything in this genre. Maybe I expected them to sound more like Spyrogyra, one of my faves. Need to leave and create a Yellowjacket s station. Peace to all of you!
One of my all-time favorite bands. So many great songs. The spirituality comes through clearly. Saw them in SF last year - wonderful. Bill Kennedy is just fantastic.
I always thought this was David Sanborn. I love this song
My favorite praying to come to Pittsburgh, love their music takes my mind all over the world.
I must say whom ever is jackets fan can't be all bad LOL
Bio correction: Ricky Lawson was the original drummer and Will Kennedy came after his departure from the group.
Musical creativity and chops at their best!!!

very cool group of musicians,ex c e l l e n t . !
It's time for the Yellowjacket s to come back to Memphis, TN. I have never missed a concert.
I saw the Yellowjacket s here in Texas a little over a month ago and I LOVED their show; they are amazingly talented and a total pleasure to watch. I was in awe of their talent and mutual respect for each other while they play and put on an extraordinar y show; they are true musical entertainers !

listening to yj makes me miss weather report and joe zawinul all the more.
I agree with Nate completely. Too often these reviews sound like somebody who read it (a bio written by someone else), rather than listened to it (the music). But I am partial to the guitar, so that's probably why I like the first album the best. But I like horns too, so I still love the Jackets. But an artist's first album is usually his/her best in any genre anyway.

This reviewer made it sound like the band made a giant step forward after Robben Ford left. Strange how I realized that was really why I liked the Yellowjacket s in the first place. Haven't heard anything to compare to the first couple of albums with Robben Ford's guitar playing.

I have all their stuff except compilations albums. I really dug the Russo sound. But Greenhouse was an instant hit for me when Mintzer came. Certainly the sound was changed but they are so tight, it was still right. But then Will Kennedy left and I was heart broken. Marcus Baylor, an excellent drummer, had a different style clearly, but it didn't work as well for me. I still bought the records because the Man, Ferrante, has a style I want to hear until he is dead, literally or artistically .
Been a fan since the early 80's
Became a fan recently. DIG IT!!

Pretty Fab.
I forgot all about this particular tune. "Geraldine." One of my absolute favorites. Thought provoking tune. Brings back memories. Some good. Some not so good.

Now how do I get oz to play?
The energy of the Yellowjacket s ' music definitely shifted when Bob Mintzer joined the band. It is a real trip to watch them perform live. They are also very gracious and personable when you see them live, because they enjoy meeting and greeting with the audience.
ferrante plays all the right notes

My Husband wants the 4 Corners Album. Does anybody know where I can find a CD for him?
Yellow Jackets have a sweet jazz flavor to them.... All of thier music is fun to listen to and great to chill out on....
The greatest jazz fusion band of all time.
isoldeyoumi
where are the rest of the albums?
After seeing Yellow Jackets live and Blue Note N.Y.C. I was not impressed with the Bass Man! he sometimes over extended himself and played out riffs with out having a way back then had to restart again while the band played on. Also they seemed in a comfort zone. the band lacked being sponteneous. Over all it was just a "getby" performance.
gfloering
Yes, Erskine did play with them for a short while. I saw them in concert with him at the Interlochen Arts Academy. This is one of my favorite bands. The addition of Mintzer was artistically very good. When you look at all the others that have been in the band since the beginning, (1981?) they have always had great players on the band.

The Yellowjacket s are one of the groups that epitomize what jazz is all about. I love this groups vibe.
