Yellowjackets

Although sometimes grouped with Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets are actually one of the most creative regular groups in the "rhythm & jazz" genre. Founded in 1981 as an R&B-oriented band that starred guitarist Robben Ford, the group took a giant step forward when, after Ford's departure, altoist Marc Russo took his place. With original members Russell Ferrante on keyboards and electric bassist Jimmy Haslip, in addition to drummer William Kennedy, the band found its own R&B-ish sound, sometimes playing original compositions that sounded like Joe Zawinul at his most melodic. Starting out on Warner Bros. in the early '80s, Yellowjackets moved to MCA/GRP in 1986, where they released a string of well-received albums. In the '90s, Russo chose to go out on his own, and his replacement, Bob Mintzer (on tenor and bass clarinet), added more jazz credibility to the group's music. They moved back to Warner Bros. in 1995 for several albums before moving to the Heads Up label for the live two-CD set Mint Jam in 2002. Their first studio album in five years, Time Squared, was released in 2003. Three years later, the band celebrated its 25th anniversary as an ensemble with the release of the live album Twenty Five. The studio album Lifecycle followed in 2008. In 2011, the band marked its 30th year with the release of Timeline on Mack Avenue. In 2013 the band released A Rise in the Road, their first album to showcase new bassist Felix Pastorius (son of Jaco). Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire also guested on three tracks. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Why aren't four corners and politics in album discography? They are two of their best albums.
Loved this band since it's inception with Robben Ford at the helm. Always put on a great show. Even loved their performance with Chris Botti at the Hollywood Bowl last year!!
You missed the second album they made. It was called Mirage A Trois.

Lucky to see them in Charlotte on Saturday night with Spyro Gyra... Great Concert. They still sound great !
Saw them in concert multiple times and their sound never gets old. Got all their music. Love em
Yellow Jackets are awesome. I was introduced to them by my brother Larry, a jazz bass funkateer in the early 80's. I've loved them since.
Witnessed their fine musicianship live at Santa Monica College way back in 82. Bob Mintzer sold me on them ever since he joined them.
I have embraced Yellowjacket s since their beginning. To experience the group's evolution move full circle. Being able to witness them in concert is just simply amazing to behold. I'm a TRUE lifetime fan of this group.
This band is like a baptist church rocking on a Sunday morn x
Saw them at an art museum in La Jolla way back in the 80's. Fantastic show. Been a fan forever it seems.
Greetings from Denmark
Been a fan since Mirage a trois and as I get older I love their music for other reasons than when I was younger - amazing - love you guys
The addition of Bob Mintzer was a masterful stroke !!! Check out "River Waltz". WOW !!! Thanks Mr Mintzer x
The Yellowjacket s kick a** !!! With all the personnel changes they've gone thru, they still rock !!!! X
Shades!!? Won a Grammy and not even mentioned here..? I love that album.
Sorry 2 say this but there can never, ever, be any comparison between The Jackets & Spyro Gyra, simply imposible! I happen 2 have seen both bands live which was truly a blessing & an honour. So excuse me but THE YELLOW JACKETS are in a way different plateau sir!
Yes! Another one of my all-time bands. Hope 2 listen 2 more of your excellent work. By the way, I remember back when I saw you in concert @ NYC!

Just saw these guys in Boston. Amazing!! Amazing!
LOVED having the opportunity to see them at the Dakota in Minneapolis and chat after the show (very cool and down to earth folk)!

any band you grow up with, grows on you. So, 20 years later, Yellow Jackets everytime still gets a smile on my face.
Love this band and this tune is my after hours driving on the city streets creeper!
I like the yellowjacket s just fine and Robben Ford also for that matter but jeez, Pandora seems to be pushing them awfully hard today..... its like all my stations are dripping in honey!...... . . . (i know,,,,coul d n t resist tho)
@Rodney Alan Crawford- I never knew Ricky Lawson played with the jackets... thank you
This is a band I need to hear more of. I have listened to them in the past and they didn't do anything for me. Surprising, because I usually like almost anything in this genre. Maybe I expected them to sound more like Spyrogyra, one of my faves. Need to leave and create a Yellowjacket s station. Peace to all of you!
One of my all-time favorite bands. So many great songs. The spirituality comes through clearly. Saw them in SF last year - wonderful. Bill Kennedy is just fantastic.
I always thought this was David Sanborn. I love this song
My favorite praying to come to Pittsburgh, love their music takes my mind all over the world.
I must say whom ever is jackets fan can't be all bad LOL
Bio correction: Ricky Lawson was the original drummer and Will Kennedy came after his departure from the group.
Musical creativity and chops at their best!!!
Bravoooooooo o o ! ! !

Love their music! Listen to them whenever I need to mellow out. Never had the pleasure of catching them in person thou I certainly will if they come close. Ray in Philly
Not sure how many times I've listened to this track but it never gets old!
JLMatta52: By far the best especially this album, will be one of my favorit for many years to come.
Love the Yellowjacket s and have for years!

very cool group of musicians,ex c e l l e n t . !
It's time for the Yellowjacket s to come back to Memphis, TN. I have never missed a concert.
I saw the Yellowjacket s here in Texas a little over a month ago and I LOVED their show; they are amazingly talented and a total pleasure to watch. I was in awe of their talent and mutual respect for each other while they play and put on an extraordinar y show; they are true musical entertainers !

listening to yj makes me miss weather report and joe zawinul all the more.
I agree with Nate completely. Too often these reviews sound like somebody who read it (a bio written by someone else), rather than listened to it (the music). But I am partial to the guitar, so that's probably why I like the first album the best. But I like horns too, so I still love the Jackets. But an artist's first album is usually his/her best in any genre anyway.
