BlessED, these guys knew what they were doing with larger forms, as did Genesis. Rush -- one of my favorite bands -- is smart, proficient & eclectic - the progressive vein was only one of their forays, which they edged away from decades ago. I think The Camera Eye on Moving Pictures (1981) was their last true extended progressive piece.

John, I was exposed to a little ELP and some some of the less truly prog.-rock Genesis (Duke and then later). But this album, along with CTTE, Fragile, TTO were the standard for me. That being said, having heard other prog-rock, not counting maybe 2112 and Hemispheres by Rush, I very much understand the phrase, fall under their own weight. I will have to consult a music dictionary to full get the rest of your post. :) Thanks for the time and insight.

I mean that many ambitious progressive tracks fall under their own weight, but this one has actual motivic development, sufficient contrasts and sharply etched themes and is well-paced and colorfully arranged - all together, these elements ensure that the whole really works as a big, broadly conceived piece of music.

John....ambi t i o u s . . . w e l l - c h o s e n word. The phrase ...that payed off is intriguing. Please expound.

I still vividly recall the first time I heard CTTE on a NYC FM station. I was hooked and have never wanted to break this habit. All time favorite band.

The way these men could bring such instrumentat i o n through keyboards, strings, synthesizers and voice is an art form within an art form.

Awaken always delivers. So powerful and majestic. My favorite viewing was on the Dallas Union tour date. Gorgeous beyond words. This is without a doubt one of Yes's masterpieces .

Seen them do this piece live many times , but I think the best was at the Union show ,where Wakeman , Banks , Howe , Rabin ,Bruford ,White ,Squire and Anderson were on the same stage..

Of course I expected it from Chris, Steve and Alan, but Geoff Downes and Jon Davison pulled this off admirably in Scottsdale last Friday night. Excellent song, excellent show.

Fri 9/23/77 a friend and I got off work, hopped in my van and drove straight through from Albuquerque to L.A. A friend who lived there had got us Yes tickets. Sat 9/24 we went to the Going For the One concert at The Forum, my 2nd Yes concert. Awaken was amazing, as was the entire show. Sunday we drove home and went back to work Monday, much better for it!

Awaken, Tales and Relayer are three off their best works and unappreciate d even to this day even by many Yes fans. It's quite amazing to me how they maintained this level of creativity for so many years.

Going for the One is one of my all time favorite albums. Not a bad track on the entire set.

I saw yes for the first time in atlanta ga in 1977 they did this song that night and I swear it was the most mystical musical experience I have had in my life - it was better than the record - and i remember that jon anderson kept telling the audience that the group was having technical problems - this was way before computers and midi technology and rick wakeman played everything perfectly and the rest of the band followed suit, and I remember they played close to the edge that night too - so w

What a great song! This album was a real comeback for Yes. Crack musicianship with beautiful songwriting. The song "Awaken" is a prog masterpiece.

After listening to the Yes catalog for many years, I find "Awaken" to be one of the best songs and "Going for the One" one of the best albums. The use of the pipe organ on the album and the rising spiral chord structure of the song add a level of majesty that are rarely matched.

sometimes the song's more important than the words, really.

These lyrics ARE in fact Incorrect. Not sure wher Pandora gets the lyrics from, but if its the internet ,that is why they are wrong. Did you ever check out some of the lyrics or chords to songs on the internet ? It's a hoot what some people think they hear! The only chords that are correct are Steely Dan songs, becaus e only great musicians would even care to try to get them correct

These printed lyrics are wrong. According to the original album, the words are: "Awaken, gentle, mass, touch" not awaken in the mass touch. Also, it's "strong, dreams reign here" and "star, song, ageless". I've been listening to this album since about 198? I hope I haven't been singing it wrong for almost 30 years. However, it is still one of my favorite alltime compositions , right up there with CTTE, and TFTO.

This song, especially the instrumental section from the pipe organ solo forward, has the power to make me weep with the joy of being alive.

One of the best Prog/Rock songs ever written. Check out live version on bargain basket "Extended Versions" CD, worth every nickel. Yes's opus live.

One of the most diverse and powerful songs ever. I never get tired of hearing it.

The soaring beauty and complexity of this song! I had this on vinyl years ago. It's wonderful to hear it again. I just checked the credits and confirmed what I had heard in the music -- composed by Anderson and Howe.

Let the critics use the 'p' word -- this is as good as pop/rock music gets.
