I never really knew how completely awesome Close to the Edge was until I saw them play it in '77 (maybe '78). Nothing else like it from anyone ever. The best song ever IMHO-

What a musical journey these guys were on! A whipping wave of emotions with such pristine depth and clairity! This is absolutely beautifully timeless! The way they recorded it in sections and edits,if anybody has done their homework, was insane and painstakingl y tedious! Which is why it sounds as great as it does... LOL... My boss just came in my office and asked me: 'Why do I hear birds'? Where do I begin???!!! 'Have a seat and open your mind and ears'!!!

Good Pandora. Thank you.

Yeah, Pandora has some incorrect songwriter information here...

I just noticed Lisa Marie Presley in the credits. What role did she play?

To kid073, the lyrics aren't meant to be taken literally. Most Yes lyrics are symbolic, meant to try to paint pictures in your head. Give it a try.

The ultimate headphones tune.

Reminds me of first hearing the unexpected beginning of CTTE in concert and knowing I was in for a treat. Intensely pleasurable.

usul99, The reason for that is one man and his name is Ahmet Urtegen. He was responsible for all kinds of GREAT MUSICIANS recording for Atlantic records . He was an executive that actually knew what goodd music was and he grenuinely liked good music. No one like him nowadays....

One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite groups- seen Yes 20 times live over the years starting in 1976- everytime I hear this I am amazed that record executives in the 70's had the balls to allow this kind of music on vinyl. Now all they release is repetetive pop junk for the masses. Total mass retain indeed!

Amazing to get to hear the original of this on New Year's Eve. One of the greatest tracks of all time. I do however disagree with some of the comments below. I think that there are some other long progressive pieces on it's level. Tarkus(ELP), A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers(VDGG ) , and their own first movement of Tales plus a few others. I also saw them perform it live with Wakeman. Yes fans are 95% rite on with this one.

Why get stoned? This music's the only drug you need...

Had a little band meeting after rehearsal last night, and we decided to try and pull this one off. We'll see what happens.

crlinder9: Yeah, I can see how "rearrange your liver (WTF??) to the solid mental grace" could be construed as a reflection on the intellectual i z a t i o n of the complete evolution of mankind's inner beauty, ugliness... and... uh.... yeah."

But hey, great music to get STONED to!

Wonderful music. As for the lyrics, I suggest thinking of them either as another instrument or as a stream of consciousnes s that expresses emotional and intellectual states in a highly metaphorical way. A kind of meditation on humanity and its place in the world with all of its beauty and ugliness, kindness and cruelty.

What the f**k do these lyrics mean???

Close To The Edge. Still my favorite song, favorite album, since I first heard it in 1973.

This just might be the pinnacle of LP music. I'm not sure any rock artist ever came this close to perfection, ever again.

Greatest motherpoking prog rock song ever.

Definitely the best song ever written. An altered state of mind is the best way to hear this song, especially at daybreak.

I agree that this is their best long-form composition, the peak of their career. They manage to keep it going for a whole album side, and kept it interesting and tied together without getting monotonous. Some of the stuff on Going for the One came close, but this song set the standard which they were never able to again surpass. Topographic Oceans had its good moments, but Relayer was mostly a disappointme n t .

awwww yeaaahhhh YES FOREVER. each one of their songs comes with a 100% ME GUSTA guarantee

simply the best.

lourx4fun gets it...just simply let go and grok the roc k et ry...let your mind breathe the starshine currents in the topographic oceans of your swift, sleek, southbound soul.

. . .and that I HAVE changed, simply, within that realization.
I ask that we stop the deconstructi o n of this song, and most all of Yes' work, just for a moment to glance at the meta-picture : hear the lyrics through the astral mind by letting go of attachment to "hard" meaning and, allow yourself to buoyed and carried along by the soundscape created by these genius spiritual pioneers. Then, I think, we are closer to the edge of perceiving the scope, scale, and intention of this art.

I looked around and my social dance was LUCIFER.
I laughed at my self, knowing through the eternal
love of CHRIST I could change.

It's always good to hear the original, with Bruford, one more time.

Yes might be the most underrated band of all time.
