I disagree with the commenter who said Gates of Delirium is not a song to dance to! I saw them perform this on the YesSymphonic tour (the amazing Tom Brislin on keyboards), and during the battle sequence I just HAD to get out of my seat and move. One of the most amazing musical experiences of my life.
Top 3 yes songs all time
unsure about this song....a sharper sound than the rocking sections of close to the edge but the closing sections kinda wimps out for me.
The best anti-war anthem ever!
Patrick Moratz brought out the best of everyone
Soon Oh Soon the Light
My favorite YES song!! Wooii

Does anyone here know the connection between The Gates Of Delerium, Relayer, the album artwork and the book by E.R.R. Eddison, The Worm Oroboros?

I saw them live in the round on the Union tour! Going to see them next month. Can't wait!
or Keeping it simple: One only need say Whew!
This piece is nothing short of overwhelming power. Powerful lyrics. Great flow. Massive changeups. Absoluteloy collosal to see live. Takes you you into the heart of chaos and then leaves you with such an uplifting finale. Stupendous. Peace.
All the good musicianship of the band on display in this song
Soon oh soon the light
Pass within and soothe this endless night
And wait here for you
Our reason to be here

Soon oh soon the time
All we move to gain will reach and calm
Our heart is open
Our reason to be here

Long ago, set into rhyme

Soon oh soon the light
Ours to shape for all time, ours the right
The sun will lead us
Our reason to be here

Back in 1975 during 9th grade I went ov"er to a friends house after school'. I was looking, through his albums and when I saw RELAYER I thought it was the coolest album cover I ever saw. Still one of my favorites to this very day.
My first of 42 Yes shows was the Relayer tour. Opened with Sound Chaser ,and they also played this MASTERPIECE. ! ! ! ! ! ! !
I've seen yes 42 times since 1975 and Wakeman NEVER played Gates . I have seen two or three other keyboard players with them do it though.
@cowniew - The tour you saw In The Round was the Tormato tour with Wakeman, and no, they didn't play Gates of Delirium (I would love to hear Rick's take on it). You're absolutely right about seeing a band more than once. I was fortunate to see the Tormato tour twice - October '78 at the Forum, Inglewood, CA, and May '79 at Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA. Both great shows. I'll be traveling to my 18th Yes concert in August, in Scottsdale, AZ.

I would love to hear Pandora play the first movement of Tales it is truly magnificent.

The last five to six minutes of this great work are among the finest in Progressive Rock. I saw yes live and only once in the mid to late 70s. They played in what was called the round. Wakeman had rejoined the band and the whole show was awesome. But I just can't remember if they played this. It really makes a difference to see a great band more than once if you get the opportunity.
The pause, and then rise to the final chord gets me every time. Perfect.

It's just great to read so many positive comments about a great song that was trashed by the critics because Wakeman left just prior to this. The last 6 minutes proves that he wasn't missed a bit. Also great to hear Pandora play the whole song instead of just tidbits.
Pandora really gets 5.1 right. And when they play entire songs like this: That does'nt hurt either.
and everyone fails to acknowledge the great slide guitar work of Steve HOwe
its lives not lies
Oh my Lord! Good Friday morning to me! Starting it off with Gates. Soon, oh, soon.....

Truly a masterpiece. It has grown richer and deeper as I've grown older. If you want to get sense of Chris's incredible contribution to this music, check out miguelbass doing a cover. It is truly impressive. http://www.y o u t u b e . c o m / w a t c h ? v = k c - Q F _ b N 2 5 M
These aren't songs which were written, they're pieces of music which were composed.
. . .he also said that playing it had felt like a dream to him because it had been 15 years since they had last performed it in its entirety. We happened to have great seats, so I took the opportunity to respond that, "it was like a dream for us too!" at which point Jon turned downstage and put his face in his hands as if to cry. I still get chills.
Crowned and Conquering really distills it, "pure light made into music." one of the most memorable and moving experiences in my life was when I got to see this song (Relayer) played in its entirety, live at Jones Beach on Long Island (a fantastic venue btw). They absolutely nailed it! By the end of the piece you could feel how the audience had been carried off by the song to travel through it's tale. At the end Jon paused to thank us, as always. . .
Peacefull LIES will not deliver freedom.
Seen any peacefull lies recently?
Saw this tour. Made me forever a Yes fan (& I'm not a 'fan' kinda guy).

Sums up the thoughts of every nation.

favorite yes tune, wish they played in concerts more often.
anderson has been singing this great for 35 years
Listening to the Gates of Delirium by Yes. I haven't heard this song in probably 30 years. Great, great, great to "meet" it again. Thanks, Pandora.
Only other song to build like this is AWAKEN. Incredible creativity
Not exactly a song to dance to...but a trippy, awesome song nontheless. Go YES!
The best progressive rock piece ever written from the best progressive rock band on planet Earth. The whole album is a masterpiece. Yes was at their creative zenith when they asked Pat Moraz to join the band and the result was this album.
Yes...at the height of thier progressive creativity.
Relayer is a musical journey into another world.
As a kid, growing up in the Mojave desert, I had one casette tape to listen to....you guessed it. I must have listened to it thousands of times! Still love it to this day.
Excellent piece of music!
Sorry to be giving my musical opinion again but, This is one amazingly well written ,excently performed piece of music ............ . . . . P E R I O D . How can any one who knows anything about what good music is, think any differently? ? ? ? ? ?
This song is FREAKIN EXCELLENT!!! ! ! Please play a song off of Tales From Topographic Oceans so more people with closed minds can complain.
Saw yes perform this song live at my first (of 42) yes shows in 1975. They had the Roger Dean (Crab Nebula stage) . In the middle (battle part) the Lasers came on . First time I had ever seen lasers . What a trip .And I was bassically sober.
no profesional capacity, but doesn't it sound like I know what I'm talking about? that's cause I do. a life long love and hobby taken to the gates of delerium. how about that, detractors.
one of their very best, highly underated album as well. I love this so much.
Not to mention all the other strange stringed instruments Mr. Howe plays!Just listened to "Gates" for probably the 6,457th time. This song is just Amazing!!!!I t ' s like experiencing a really great movie without having to use your eyes
I looked up "great musicianship " and Steve Howe's (guitar, mandolin, pedal steel) picture was near the entry.

;-)
