Zephyr

This late-'60s Denver group is most notable as the starting point for guitarist Tommy Bolin, who was still in his teens when they recorded their first album in 1969. A rather routine slab of bluesy, heavy rock, it made the Top 50. Aside from Bolin's extended hard rock riffing, it prominently featured the lead vocals of Candy Givens, who affected a blues-wailing pose along the lines of Janis Joplin. But she didn't have the full throat or guts to back it up, ending up closer to also-ran female psychedelic singers like Lydia Pense (of Cold Blood). Zephyr recorded one more album before Bolin left for stints with James Gang, Deep Purple, and a solo career; the group carried on throughout the 1970s. ~ Richie Unterberger

I got turned onto Zephyr in the 70s when I got into Tommy Bolin I found their 3 albums at record fairs and like all of them. Obviously, due to their age, the production was not what it is now, even so it's still some good jam.

I was introduced to Zephyr by a fellow sailor back in 1973 with the album Sunset Ride. I can't comment on the other albums but Sunset Ride is a definite must listen.

I have a vague recollection seeing Zephyr play at C.W. Post College on Long Isand in the early, early 70s, opening for Al Kooper and The J. Giles Band.

Thanks to all for sticking up for Candy and the rest of us. The guy who wrote the review obviously deserves our sympathy for his unfortunate condition.

It is obvious you never saw live. I did with and without Tommy Bolin. Tulogi’s on the hill (Boulder) showed them at their best. Too bad you missed out.

I always liked Candy Givens and Lydia Pense better than Janis Joplin. Janis was good but i thought the other two were better.

I disagree with the reviewer's opinion of the band in general and Candy Givens in particular. The band was hot and versatile, and Candy's vocals were not merely affectation.

This review is unfavorable. Zephyr had extremely talented musicians, The problem was production. They were such a Jam band that nobody knew how to produce them in the studio. They were well respected in business and by their peers. With the right leadership and management, this band would have soared. Still one of the most underated groups of all time.

I don't think your write-up was very complimentar y . . . . t h e three albums werer solid and her vocals make for some great classic rock, of course Bolin's riffs are unmistakeabl e . Candy well missed.

Candy and her husband , before her death also worked in a boulder band called the 4 nikators. The original Zepher also had a young guitarist named Tommy bolin that also went on to create a lot of wonderful music. Thank you Candy "Hunna Bunna!"

Zephyr actually has three albums that I know of. The best of which is called "Sunset Ride". If you like this style of music, you will love this recording!
