Zox

Despite their musical differences, eclectic jam band Zox will forever be nestled next to cult favorite Vancouver indie rockers Zumpano (Carl Newman's band prior to the New Pornographers) -- not just alphabetically, but for quirks of nomenclature: both bands are named after their drummer's surnames. In this case, drummer John Zox met singer and guitarist Eli Miller when both were undergrads at Brown University in Providence, RI, in 1999. Zox and Miller's dorm room jam sessions, marked by a shared love of vintage '80s college rock and sensitive singer/songwriters, were occasionally joined by Miller's roommate, a classically trained violinist. Enjoying the '70s prog vibe created by a lead violinist (an indie rock rarity last seen in Petra Haden and Anna Waronker's '90s band that dog.) but unable to convince Miller's roommate to join their nascent band, Miller and Zox located another, Spencer Swain, through a newspaper ad. Adding bassist Eli Batalion (replaced in 2004 by Dan Edinberg) and increasing their live profile through extensive touring throughout New England, Zox self-released their first album, Take Me Home, in 2003. Solid reviews and a greatly increased touring schedule for the now post-collegiate quartet saw the group sell over 10,000 copies of the debut outside of the usual distribution channels. Although the Mitch Easter-mixed follow-up, The Wait, was originally also released on the band's own label in 2005, the punk-oriented indie Side One Dummy signed the band later that year and reissued the album with new artwork in the spring of 2006. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

Unbelievable band, makes a sound like nothing I've heard before.

Man... I wish I could see these guys live lol love their sound
Awesome, since I've seen them with Bedouin Soundclash. I've seen them 5 other times since than.
my friend is john zox's neighbor. hahaha.
first saw zox when the opened for guster at a free show at india point in providence, ri. loved them ever since. starry night and ode to the mountain pirates are my favorites.

Love 'em. Introduced through a friend of mine, had "Anything But Fine" as his profile music. Saw 'em at Shank Hall in Milwaukee (2-14-08). Spencer climbed onto my table while playing the bridge for "Can't Look Down". Love their music, love introducing them to new people.

Reggae-influ e n c e d rythm is the 311 connection. Good Band.
cra_zy_mon_k e y _
i dont see any 311 connection.. . listen to 311 more and you will notice. but these guys are so chill its like my mind gets into trance and you just relax and kick back
Saw Zox open for Rusted Root a couple years back. They were a great opening band, fun to watch. We picked up two of their CD's after the show (Take Me Home and The Wait). Both are good, but most of the songs sound similar. I have a couple favorite songs from each cd that are worth listening to. Oh yeah, and I don't see the 311 connection.
I believe they describe themselves best "Violin-lace d Rock Reggae"... Love these guys...
You know what's odd? I saw these guys in concert with Bedouin Soundclash and Flogging Molly, and I though they were WAY closer to FM.
gimmie.byte
I see all the 311 comments. I got here through Bedouin Soundclash, then Three Legged Fox. But I just had a 311 based channel. Kinda wierd, huh? This program is psychic, yo! I mean, I plugged in 311, Beautiful Disaster popped up. I love Rage Against the Machine, BAM!!!, not only does RATM pop up next, but my favorite song of theirs, No Shelter, is the song that plays. I toke a doob, and find my new favorite thing. Who'da thought?
just wanted to throw this in, I've never heard of this band and I was upstairs when 'Rain on Me' came on...I thought that it was 311 for a minute but I had to look to make sure. Not a bad sound from these guys I'll have to check out more.
similar artists? Zox is so unique that I can't think of anything close. They're a ska band that just doesn't sound like a ska band.
Hate to disagree with almost everyone; but Zox is better in my opinon than 311. I know there will be a long list of agruments for 311, which is great a band hands down, I just enjoy the sound and lyrics of Zox.
ge4little
just to be in 311's catogory... wow, like a modern version of what were waiting for. these guys have many great songs and i recomend them highly!!

311 is the greatest band! This sounds pretty cool, not as good as 311 though.
charlesfrayn e
They don't sound like 311, and they're really good.
love em. they opened at the old lupos for Badfish while touring for Take me Home. Zox blew me away with the Canon cover. amazing show
Zox, while a local band, is actually an incredibly successful band, along with the fact that each other them maintain fantastic instrumental ability. Their sound is different from most bands, and their lead vocalist has a very well-trained talented voice. Mix that with their smooth lyrics, and this is a top band in my book.
sgreyghost12
they're from providence these awesome locals
Drago: "If he dies, he dies."
cwhambley
this is an amazing band. each member is tremendously talented at their instrument and they come together to create a very unique sound
that guys sounds like the guy Rocky fought in Russia
bromide01
