Abandoned Pools

Multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Tommy Walter goes by the alias of Abandoned Pools. Walter picked up a bass guitar in grade school and by high school was a classically trained French horn player. He enrolled at the University of Pacific in Stockton, CA, where he studied and taught music theory (and such early 20th century, 12-tone and modal composers like Schoenberg, Bartók, and Stravinsky). But teaching didn't fulfill his desire to play rock music, as he sought other similar-minded musicians in the vast L.A. pop/rock scene.

A collaboration with area singer/songwriter E led to the band Eels, but Walter soon left the project despite the promise of Eeels' 1996 debut Beautiful Freak. On his own again, Walter holed up in his apartment and began writing and recording original material. Those tracks were the genesis of Abandoned Pools, which debuted with the Humanistic LP in September 2001. AP returned in 2005 with the Reverb EP and a full-length for Universal entitled Armed to the Teeth. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

I saw Abandoned Pools as an opener for a long forgotten VH1 Band on the Run contest winner (Flickerstic k ) and was blown away more than 10 years ago. Been a patient follower ever since. By the way I was also introduced on the same night to great band out of Ireland who opened for Abandoned Pools called Rubyhorse. Check them out!

I agree. He is very talented and I wish he would release another album. Does anyone else think he kind of sounds like Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins?

So innovative. There's nothing like this in music. He just strikes a note inside you with his chord progressions and samples. Combine it with the hooks he writes... It's just great. Tommy touches something inside in a way you wouldn't expect, and definitely with s**t you wouldn't write... because you couldn't.

This is a very intelligent artist. It is smart, articulate, and moving. I wish I could have written it. Sunny Day, Mercy kiss, Maybe then someday, Armed to the teeth, Sooner or later are some of my favorites.

Totally underrated. I hope that doesn't affect the release of another album because it's way overdue...

I really believe that this group is highly underrated. I wish more people could find either of these albums. I had the chance to see them live, and I really enjoyed the show.

Josh Freese's drumming (Vandals, Perfect Circle, studio great) on the first album and Tommy Walter's sound are what originally grabbed my attention.
