François Couperin

November 10, 1668 - September 11, 1733
born in Paris, France, composed during the Baroque period
François Couperin (1668-1733) was a major French composer of the Baroque era and the most significant member of the musical Couperin family. A leading exponent of organ and harpsichord teaching in his day, he is best remembered for his Pièces de clavecin, published in four books. Couperin wrote more than 220 keyboard compositions that were often witty character studies that featured elements of the French and Italian styles. Appointed organist to the Royal Chapel by Louis XIV, Couperin also composed sacred music, including motets and other vocal works of a non-liturgical nature, and probably provided concert music for performances at Versailles. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi

This reminds me very much of a Grieg work or two!?

Very inspiring I love this song! As a piano player for 12 years (I'm only 16) I love being able to hear the passion.

I can very well immagine that in the three hundred or so years of intense classical composition that there were a great number of composers that came and have faded into the mists of time. Francois Couperin is one that I have certainly not heard of before. Well deserved obscurity is an interesting and workable concept. DMB

I have nothing intelligent to say: I like piano music

It is interesting that Couperin in some of his works merged the French and Italian styles. I can't help thinking of Francois Premier who loved the Italian arts, and imported much of that influence into the French court and culture.

I applaud the phrase "well deserved obscurity" describing much 20th-century music. Remember that Twain said that "Wagner's music is better than it sounds."

One can understand Couperin being thought of as the French Mozart. I do like his Mysterious Barricades.
Report as inappropriate
Couperin is practically pre-classica l and a gem of the Baroque era's keyboard artistry on the harpsichord. And as with many things of beauty and quality, how many or how few listen is not the measure of worth, but rather how sublimely beautiful his works are, and how they have survived into the 21st Century when so much of 20th Century music will vanish into a well-deserve d obscurity.

Wow! Only few people listen to Classics. I agree with u Tony.
