Karen Carpenter

Karen Carpenter was the lead singer for the soft-rock duo the Carpenters, who scored a string of Top 10 hits in the early '70s, including "(They Long to Be) Close to You," "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays," and "Yesterday Once More." Carpenter recorded one solo album in the late '70s, yet it was unreleased at the time. Following the recording of the record, she returned to the Carpenters, and they had one final Top 40 hit -- "Touch Me When We're Dancing" -- in 1981 before she tragically died of heart failure, brought on by anorexia nervosa, in February of 1983. Her unreleased solo album, titled Karen Carpenter, was finally released in the fall of 1996. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

It sounds like she was trying to break away from the ballots and turn into a rock and roll or pop star. Why can't people be happy with where they are and what they have. Her strength was in the soft rock ballots with her brother. Oh well, God was missing in her heart evidently.

Amazing how this thread has gone on for 7 years or more. All of us feeling the same. Just finished reading Little Girl Blue by Randy Schmidt. Karen's life story. A very enlightening read. A must read for anyone who has someone in their life with an eating disorder. Tragic loss of a voice that truly was from heaven. Even sadder knowing it could have been prevented.

Simply the best female pop singer.... ever. Perfect intonation, timbre, phrasing. What a gift from God. Unfortunatel y , He needed a lead singer in heaven much too soon.

I remember the first time I ever hear her sing on the radio! I picked We've Only Just Begun to be played at my wedding in 1972.

This was the version Karen recorded on her solo album. It was many years before her solo album would be released. My all time favorite singer/group .

I still have every album - the old records, 33s, many duplicated on CDs. I will never get rid of them. Karen's voice still sends me. Nobody else has that voice

Karen with the purity and richness in her voice and her brother that created arrangements for her that was more than music. Karen reaches my soul where the mind can create new intent, decide to give, forgive and love. She stirs the better me.

Karen Carpenter had the clearest, most beautiful voice of any singer that I
have ever heard. You can hear and understand every word, unlike most
of the trash that is broadcast today. We all lost something special!

When my wife was a young child use to want to play the drums just like Karen Carpenter. One Christmas she got a set of toy drums, but she loved them so. Karen voice still gives her the chills, she was to young to die. IMy wife looks at how Karen died and knows she don't want to die like that. May Karen RIP and God to with Richard.

Karen Carpenter's voice still resonates with me today, 40 years after I became a fan. I am sorry that in 1980, and keeping up with what was current, I strayed to other female vocalists like Pat Benatar, Ann Wilson, ONJ, etc. but Karen is the one I still listen to today.

On my honeymoon in 1970, the song played most was We've Only Just Begun. I felt a deep loss when she died. I am so grateful her music lives on.

I am 50 and have always been a huge Carpenter Fan. I am so broken hearted that such a beautiful girl didn't know how important she was to this world. She has given so many of her fans so much enjoyment and pleasure listening to her magical voice. Her brother was very talented as well , I hope is doing well. We will always love The Carpenters. Never think you are forgotten... . G o d Bless and May Karen Rest in Peace.

There's never been another Karen. She was beautiful on the inside and out, even though she never thought so. Her death was a tragic loss to all of us who grew up on the music of The Carpenters.

Karen Carpenter, Mama Cass, and Patsy Cline are my all-time favorite artists in that order, and miss them all. So glad we can still listen to them.

Karen Carpenter was one of the best voices of all time. When I hear her voice it takes me back to a moment of wonderful, "sound of music." She is never far from us, and will always live on in spirit. I am gald we are able to continue hearing such an angelic talent. She left us much to soon.

You knew in one note that it was Karen Carpenter. There is no other voice like hers. She had a way not only to sing like an angel, but her voice found its way to your heart and soul. I felt her pain and understood her sadness. To this day I still get lost in those beautiful brown eyes. She left us much to early in life but her music will be with us forever.

As Herb Alpert so aptly said after hearing Karen sign, "She had the best range in her voice and knew immediately she would be a superstar, I met my wife due to one her songs Close to You. When I hear her sing it sends a range of emotions throught my body. I truly loved her, she possessed one of the magical singing voices in my lifetime. Gone way too soon, I love you Karen R.I.P.

Richard and Karen were two _true_ students of music, and could write, arrange, and perform with the best of them. I share Caryn and Herbs comments of feeling joy and sorrow when I hear her voice. She is gone too soon.

I'm with Rickey! When I hear Karen's voice, I feel such a joy and at the same time such a great sorrow. Her passing is truly one of the music world's greatest losses!
Report as inappropriate
Beautiful voice, and as Rickey says, you know when it's she who's singing. My wife loves her voice so much, that I put 3 ringtones on my phone, which identify ONLY my wife when she calls. One is a Christmas carol, and the other two are "l-o-v-e" songs for my wife's phone calls, which say "I love you, honey. Pick up the phone!"

Karen' voice was so unique that now matter what song she sang, you knew it was her. What a special and unique talent. I feel she was always under appreciated. To this day I can hear her voice and it takes me to a very special place. Thanks Karen for sharing you talent, voice and inspirations !

There's a profound sadness deep in me when I think that Karen never really knew how magnificent she was. She was in her voice, so pure throughout her extensive range; so exact in her pitch and tone control, and always loving the music. Thank God for her continuing sound.

If I could only listen to one singer forever it would be her. Karen Carpenter and Alison Krauss have a purity of sound that you can feel resonate with your soul. Singers of today sound all alike to me. Does anyone know of a singer in these times that have her qualities?-- - - g r 8 g i l d y

I believe her brother contributed to her death by constantly nagging her about her weight. What a loss of talent!
