The Knack

Forming in Los Angeles in the late '70s, the Knack (Doug Fieger, vocals/guitar; Berton Averre, lead guitar; Prescott Niles, bass; and Bruce Gary, drums) were neither punk nor rock, but pure simple pop, standing out among the musical dross that littered the Sunset Strip. Signing with Capitol after a feeding frenzy of label offers, the Knack released their debut, Get the Knack, in 1979. With its leadoff single, "My Sharona," the Knack climbed both the album and singles charts (eventually selling millions of copies around the globe), gained wide commercial acceptance, and regenerated the power pop scene that had laid dormant for half a decade.

The Knack's image, or lack thereof, was often unfavorably compared to the Beatles, but their music relied on the rough punchiness of the Kinks and the Who rather than the Fab Four. Their refusal to do interviews turned critics against them, and by the time they released their second album, ...But the Little Girls Understand, less than a year after the debut, the backlash had already begun ("Knuke the Knack").

The Knack then began a quick spiral downward that they were never to recover from. Their third album, Round Trip, was adventurous and daring and received favorable reviews, but the band decided to split up soon after the album was released. Due to their continuing underground popularity, the Knack resurfaced almost a decade later (minus Bruce Gary) and recorded the abysmal Serious Fun before hiding out once again to lick their wounds. The appearance of "My Sharona" on soundtracks and compilations caused the Knack to be thrown in the midst of a revival of sorts, reuniting and playing the occasional show in L.A. Bruce Gary temporarily returned to the fold, but by the time the Knack released their second "reunion" album, Zoom, during the summer of 1998, the drum stool had been filled by Terry Bozzio (formerly of Missing Persons and Frank Zappa's band). Still, the bandmembers hoped that a whole new generation of music fans would get the Knack with the release of 2001's Normal as the Next Guy, an album that found the group at its best when discarding old formulas. Fieger, however, died in 2010 after battling lung and heart cancer. ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee

When are they gonna add the But the Little Girls Understand album to Pandora?

Yes, But Chuck T, Van Halen has amazing guitar skills, but I would pay to make them stop singing.

Trolls please go away

How is Chuck T full of s---? Every player he mentioned was active at the time, and the following year we would be introduced to Randy Rhodes. How was Zeppelin a memory? In Through the Out Door was released in 1979, returning much of their back catalog to the charts as well. I’ve always liked this band, and I like the MS solo as well. It wouldn’t however be very difficult to list many better ones. That’s not a dig; great pop bands are about hooks not virtuoso solos.

This was a great album. Chuck T. you are full of s**t. Led Zeppelin as much as I love them were almost a memory by 1979. The Knack were an awesome Pop group at a time when pop music was almost lost. I personally rate the Knack along great pop bands such as Rockpile, and the Pretenders.

Great band 2nd album and serioius fun r great albums they should have had more success than they had

Referring to the My Sharona guitar solo as one of the greatest in rock is quite far-fetched. While definately enjoyable - it is ridiculously long and offers nothing new or fresh as far as technique goes. Remember at the time you had Eddie Van Halen, Michael Schenker, Jimmy Page and many others scorching the frets. The Knack guy does not belong with such great players - for sure.

How can you say that Serious Fun was abysmal? Really? The label went belly up the week after release and the Rocking Album got no promotion. Sorry to disagree but Serious Fun is the hidden treasure cd in the bargain rack!

their one hit is nauseating. there was so much better music at the time we had supertramp, the cars, we had b-52's, donna summer, foreigner, Elvis costello, Rolling stones, just to name a few so much better s**t than the stupid knack.

My best friend Glenn and I, spent the whole summer fishing when this song came out and/or was all over the radio. We chewed Beachnut Wintergreen Leaf (don't tell my parents). Battery Radio the norm, there wasn't anything else. We caught lots of fish that year, lost a couple big ones, caught a few big ones. This song will always bring me back to wonderful memories.

First two albums are outstanding and totally under-rated. This songwriting is exceptional.

I got the Knack in 1979 when it was released, and that album blew me away! What a great album! I was fortunate to them in concert before Mr. Fieger passed away (RIP)....

Curtmel, I saw an opening band in the 80's called Helix. The singer did the same thing with the mike stand for their whole set. Everyone in the arena was laughing and mocking the guy by the time Whitesnake came on. So lame it was funny.

Back in 79 my girlfriend got tickets for free, so we went, good show, the lead singer pretty much jacked off the mike stand the whole concert.

For you kids out there-this was a MONSTER when it hit the airwaves. Some people thought they were gonna be the next Beatles. Not quite, but great tune!

My Sharona is still one of the best songs...EVER ! It's in my top 5 and no one should ever redo this single. It's perfect the way it is. Leave it alone as a testament to the group's legacy. Their first single is unquestionab l y their best. (Good Girls Don't is also worthwhile.)

My Sharona was my favorite "between inning" song as I umpired baseball in the Big 10.

Peggy, honey, what the hell are you going on about? Fun memories of this band before the masses got their greedy hands on them. It' s good they made money, probably set for life, but it was way more fun when they were underground, and most people didn't know who they were. THey deserve the respect they are getting. It's not their fault FM radio played them to s**t.
Report as inappropriate
The Knack, the Cars, Cheap Trick. Throw in the Kinks and Neil Young and that was pretty much all I listened to in those days.
Report as inappropriate
Still one of the greatest debut albums of all time, drove the stake in the heart of disco.
