Phoebe Snow

Renowned for her elastic contralto and jazz scat vocal gymnastics, singer Phoebe Snow was born Phoebe Laub on July 17, 1952, in New York City. During her childhood in Teaneck, NJ, she initially studied piano, but switched to the guitar in her teens, writing poetry that gradually mutated into her first songs. Overcoming her stage fright, Snow began playing Greenwich Village clubs in the early '70s, honing an eclectic set that spotlighted both folk and pop sounds as well as jazz, blues, and even torch songs.

After signing to Leon Russell's Shelter label, Snow issued her self-titled debut LP in 1974; on the strength of her Top Five smash "Poetry Man," the album itself rose to the number four position. A tour with Paul Simon followed, along with an appearance on his hit "Gone at Last"; after returning to the studio, Snow emerged in 1976 with Second Childhood, another highly successful effort that, like its predecessor, achieved gold-selling status. Despite a flurry of records throughout the latter half of the decade, including 1977's It Looks Like Snow, 1977's Never Letting Go, and 1978's Against the Grain, Snow receded from view as the 1980s dawned, and following the release of 1981's Rock Away, she did not record again for eight years.

Upon signing to Elektra, Snow resurfaced in 1989 with Something Real, followed by a series of New York club appearances as a member of ex-Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagen's all-star New York Rock and Soul Revue. Apart from lending her voice to a number of radio and television advertisements, Snow again fell silent in subsequent years, although in 1994 she appeared at Woodstock with a gospel group additionally comprised of Mavis Staples, CeCe Peniston, and Thelma Houston. Three albums were recorded and released during the late '90s and the 2000s: 1998's I Can't Complain, 2003's Natural Wonder, and 2008's Live in Woodstock. After suffering a brain hemorrhage in 2010, Snow passed away in April of the following year. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Thanks to Catrinus2 for sharing the most important essence of Phobe.
Every one of her songs touched me in a meaningful way. I was a huge fan from the first album to the last. It should be noted in her bio that she receded from the spotlight for a number of years not because she didn't have anything to say, but because she chose to focus her time and energies on her daughter, who was born with profound disabilities but survived into her 30s. Phoebe was a beautiful soul as well as a gifted artist.

Phoebe's album Second Childhood is missing from Pandora. It's one of her best.

No one like her. Way back in my youth in the 80's I was walking around Manhattan--n e a r Central Park West and I saw her! It's not like me to impose on privacy but I had to tell her:Phoebe Snow, I love you!

She turned around before stepping off the curb, looked at me and said a gracious thank you --if only she knew how much her music meant to me and made me feel--maybe she did. I hope so. SOULful. What a life and such challenges with her little girl that she stuck by 100%. Solid.
i first heard her song something real when i was about eight years old watching video music box, I love her voice.
Anyone notice that the comments here could make you cry! She was one of a kind.

I saw her perform in Santa Cruz years ago and I can close my eyes today, go back there in time and 'smile' all over!
she takes it all the way to the soul ............
The only difference between my appreciation for Phoebe's unique voice, when I hear 'Poetry Man' then (1974) and now (2012), is that knowing she's has left us...it brings tears to my eyes. When she sings, her voice embed's itself in the center of my heart and play's my emotions with pleasure. A true Blessing from God to all of us and to 'Music'.
she was great when I sang her songs I could fell it in my soul
i can imagine her in heaven singing wth the great jazz and big bands--duke, count, harry, tommy, benny, louie, glen,,,,,,,, , , , , o n e of the real greats....

She was not in view because she was caring for her severly challenged daughter until her death (her daughter's death at 31 in 2007). She chose not to institutiona l i z e her and dedicated herself to her care... Awesome person in so many ways.
Gosh, I am so blown away. I was not aware of her passing. Her music will always live on with me. I am so sad right now.
wow i didnt know she died wow
died in April 2011 She had a lovely voice
Started listening to Phoebe when I came of age musically in 70's. Always wanted to hear her do a duet with Aaron Neville.
I just found out Phoebe passed earlier this year. I love her voice. Her songs put me in a place of solitude. With my up days and down days she lifed my spirit. She sang like an Angel she is an Angel now. Her songs will stay with me forever!
I was so sad when I heard of Phoebe's death. I started listening to her when my daughter was a baby (she's 40 now). What a beautiful voice, beautiful spirit. She dropped out of the music scene for years to take care of her handicapped baby daughter. I will never tired of listening to her recordings. Bless you sweet Phoebe.
Big Daddy - She was the bomb then, and her recordings are the bomb now!
my mother would listen to Phoebe when I was a little boy. I remember this music being in my house as long as I remember anything else. Last week I showed my mother how to make her own Phoebe Snow station on Pandora. It made her so happy I was near tears. How cool is that?
my mother would listen to

I am 61 years old and I still listen to Phoebe. What a loss - I still miss her and what might have been. Beautiful, soulfull voice.
rest in peace angel phoebe
My favorite artist, so much that I named my daughter, Phoebe. If, you came to my place in the 70's you fell in love with Phoebe, because that was what was playing on the music box. You had to love her to be in my company. She is a unique angel.
Her first album was indeed a smash. I listen to it from time to time, never bored... and most always I use songs from it ,as well as other classics she sings, for making playlists. She was dynamite, electric in a way that usually captured my most inner feelings. I short, Phoebe its so nice that you "were" and it's so nice that we have your recording. Thank you for your efforts. Yes, I felt a pang-string break when news of her death hit the news.

It's been six months, and I just found out she was gone. Oh, my God. A chunk of me just died. EPap52
