Ralph Towner

One of the founders of Oregon, Ralph Towner is one of the few modern jazz musicians to specialize in acoustic guitar. His playing often stretches beyond the boundaries of conventional jazz into world music and is quite distinctive. He started playing piano when he was three and trumpet at five, performing in a dance band when he was 13. Towner studied classical guitar in Vienna and played with classical chamber groups in the mid-'60s.

After moving to New York in 1969, Towner worked with Jimmy Garrison, Jeremy Steig, and Paul Winter's Winter Consort (1970-1971). In the latter group, Towner first met up with Collin Walcott, Glen Moore, and Paul McCandless, and in 1971 they broke away to form Oregon, a highly versatile group ranging from jazz and free improvisations to folk music. Towner (who guested with Weather Report in 1971 and played with Gary Burton a bit during 1974-1975) has performed and recorded with Oregon extensively since its formation, in addition to recording as a leader and with many other artists on the ECM label.

While on tour in 2003 with guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, Towner encountered the Kazakhstan classical guitarist Slava Grigoryan, who suggested a collaboration. Towner assembled a tour in 2005, which presented each man as a soloist, in duets, and in trios. They began to play and tour together as a "band" whenever time would permit. The group's progress was first documented on From a Dream, issued on Muthspiel's Material label. Towner brought the project to ECM in 2012. The trio recorded in Lugano, Switzerland with producer Manfred Eicher, and released Travel Guide in the fall of 2013. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Towner... always superlative! Been listening since the seventies and has never disappointed . Saw him in a very small setting at Emory in Atlanta probably 17 years ago, solo performance. Sat in front row 6 feet from him... what a treat. Sat on the fire escape at intermission and BSed - didn't know he is a huge basketball fan! No wonder with the touch he has with his hands.

And ddorn, you are so right. What a great lineup with Garbarek, Weber & Christensen. The first Soltice album is th
Towner is right up there among my very favorite guitarists and this album is my favorite of his outings. Putting Towner, Garbarek, Weber & Christensen together...? Just doesn't get any better than that!

I've followed Towner since his days with Oregon and after the fact dug up his Winter Consort albums Road and Icarus. I had the pleasure of seeing Oregon back in the latter 70's while I was going to Michigan State University.
Always a pleasure to listen to. Acoustic excellence.
Its always so good to hear ralph towner he is a world class guitar player - you donot hear him enough - he is in a class all on his own - I started listening to oregon-(out of the woods}- when I was about 16 yrs old - I think alot of other kids my age where listening to the group BOSTON they were all the rage on the radio that year - I was also just starting to hear pat metheney and some other fusion artist at that time - it was nice to hear some real music - keep playing RALPH TOWNER.
I seen Ralph a few times in concert. Once was early 70's with Oregon in a little club in outside of Pittsburgh, PA...it was a night club setting and was just an unbelievable concert...co l l i n Walcott is sadly missed but Ralph is always world class..just seen him 3 years ago touring with 4 other guitarist..g r e a t musician...
Last I heard, Ralph lived in Italy, and seems to play more in Europe than in his native US. I was lucky enough to see him as soloist in Fort Lauderdale and with Oregon as trio in Miami, in the 90s. Very unusual to see them in the States, but if you get a chance, don't miss it. Towner did a follow-up with Gary Burton (who now lives in Lauderdale) in the 80s on ECM.

Really reminds me of Egberto Gismonti
Does he ever tour? I never hear of him playing live anywhere in the South.
Terrific acoustical.. . . t h e man knows what he and his music is about.
This man I call friend. He is as warm and caring as his music always reflects. He once said, "I always have problems naming my songs. Giving them names". Thank goodness he figures it out. I have listened to this man's music since 1972. Ralph's music has always been there. This man has a special place in my heart and soul. Countless, immersions spirtual and transporting . .
