The Tea Party

Jeff Martin grew up in Windsor, Ontario, just across the Detroit River from the home of proto-punk and the Motown sound; he was also influenced by his blues-loving father. He formed the Tea Party with multi-instrumentalists Stuart Chatwood (bass, keyboards, mandolin, and harmonium) and Jeff Burrows (drums, percussion). Martin himself plays guitars, sitar, hurdy gurdy and harpguitar. Consequently, the trio's sound marries rock with elements of Middle Eastern, Celtic and Mediterranean music. Their 1993 album, Splendor Solis, sold over one million copies in Canada; The Edges of Twilight followed, trailed in 1997 by Transmission. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Transmission is one of my favourite albums of the 90s. I've searched for music and bands like it, but it's all too rare. Bizarre.

Jim Morrison meets Pearl Jam, sort of. They were real popular on the Seattle airwaves back in the 90's. That's how I heard them for the first time.

Similar Artists references an incorrect row in the database table. //RGB 2014/12/03

One of the greatest rock bands of last 20 years

The fact the bio is this short, when they're one of the seminal Canadian bands of the 1990s, is pretty shameful.
Report as inappropriate
Uh. Like, why aren't The Doors listed as a similar artist and why aren't there any doors songs on here. The Splendor Solis and Edges of Twilight are oozing with Doors influence.

Love these guys

One of the most underestimat e d bands out there. They're talented as f**k. They deserve a better Bio than this

Even here in Detroit where these guys are damn near local, they received very little airplay(and only on the Windsor station when they did). So I always felt like I was in on an awesome secret by liking this band. Glad to see they've reformed. I look forward to seeing them live again!

Sings like Morrison, solos like Hendrix and riffs like Page. There is no other like him!

The Tea Party has reformed and are making a new album and Jeff Martin is not short.

The Edges of Twilight. One of the best rock albums ever.
Report as inappropriate
hey continuous shot, they have reformed, I saw them in Sydney last July. They have a dvd of the show available now.

what a shame, its now 2013 and I'm just now enjoying the music and band that is long gone.

Great band, but yeah, the Doors really should be listed as a similar band. I'd be tempted to list Zeppelin too. Some of the others like Alice in Chains I can buy too (but of all the other 90's grunge bands STP is probably the closest), but Deftones, no. I like the Deftones but they are really not similar to this band, and I wouldn't place them in the same station either.

sick band!

It's a shame they tried to change their sound in the end. They were magical, a real diamond in the rough of the mediocre music industry.

Heard a funny story about them on NPR (which consequently reminded me of their existence). Apparently they've come to realize their website is a goldmine and are selling it to the highest bidder. Their initial thought was to sell it to Jon Stewart, but that didn't work out. The domain is likely to go for at least six figures, maybe seven. Talk about luck.

This is one of the bands thats basically too good for the masses, thier mix of darkness, rock, eastern sounds, mysticism, folk, blues......o m g , its amazing and unlike ANY other band out there.
Too bad theyre still not together, but at least we have what they're wonderful cauldron produced while they were creating thier art.
Report as inappropriate
I'm surprised the bio doesn't list Dead Can Dance as an influence, when the band occasionally samples their work (e.g. Luxuria).

Remeniscent of the Doors with a twist on the music.

this band is way to good for 4 short sentences for a biography... . . . c m o n
just cause they didnt have a commercial success here......

I love these guys. It is very terrible to me that they are no longer making music. They gave me good memories of the 90s

I dig it. Saw a video of them in the mid 90s on Much music once and I sorta forgot about them

much music was way better than mtv ever could be.because of bands like this and econoline .

To David Bland:

No, they were known around Seattle, as they got loads of airplay back in day for Edges of Twilight - that's how I knew of them, and yes, I'm from the States. Agreed, most definitely Jim Morrison-esq u e .

awsome!!! ever duh

rocks, sounds like a mellow led zeppelin song

Even Though the Tea Party are vampires and all there songs are about sucking blood, they got a great sound!

Classic case of egos getting in the way of a great team. Chatwood & Burrows still do some stuff together, mostly new-age, and Martin has gone acoustic & folk/bluesy. Had a fantastic DVD before they broke up. Tangents is the album to buy.

This band has moved my soul from the first song i ever heard... Most assuredly in my top 5 fav all time bands!!! Would love to see more of their EP's uploaded here, they have great remixes of some of their own songs...Deep Lyrics and Diverse instrumentat i o n - - Majickal!

Awesome. Glad they got grouped in with my top few artists, or I might never have heard of them. Still wonder about the group name, but I'm not complaining about the group or the music.

Great band. Easily in my top 5. I too have converted many to this band and was fortunate to see them live twice in B.C. Fanatic fan base for sure and a freakin mystery why they never made it big in the states.
Report as inappropriate
I think this band never got the push because they couldn't be easily pidgeon-hole d , and that is exactly the kind of music that I like! I mean, look who my beloved Pandora thinks they sound like? Not that those bands are bad, but just kind of... blah. Over-played. And they miss the most obvious comparison-- " T h e Doors"! I saw the viceo to "The River" and I was hooked.

They recorded their first record in my hometown Burlington, VT. Our local rock radio station loved them and would play The River over and over. I got to see them twice at a tiny place called Club Toast...put on a great show! Splendor Solis is on my 'deserted island' list.

Yeah, I never heard of this band until very recently. It's too bad they didn't get promoted very much here in America. Instead, you Canadians sent us "Nickelback. " Gawd! I see how it is--keep all the good stuff to yourselves, send the crap here!

When will record companies realize that people are stupid and will buy whatever you tell them to buy, so why not promote good music?
Report as inappropriate
It is horrifying to see what Pandora thinks is "similar" to my favorite bands
Report as inappropriate
The only reason I ever heard of The Tea Party (or Econoline Crush) was because my cable provider carried Much Music back in the day. None of my friends in the U.S. had knowledge of this band.

I converted many, but it's a shame these guys were unknowns outside of Canada.

I have been listening to the Tea Party since the mid 90's, still love them! I grew up near the border of Canada and had Much Music (Canadian version of MTV)and that's where I heard them first. I don't hear them anywhere near as much since I migrated south. Nice to see other American's listen to them!
Report as inappropriate
WNY represent, Jeff Martin has one of the most magical voices i have ever heard, and he's very short
Report as inappropriate
I like that not too many people in the USA listen to the Tea Party, it makes it easier for Jeff Martin to plan his American stops. "Hmm, somewhere in WNY? Check. OK, the American leg is done" Hahaha
Report as inappropriate
In my opinion not enough people listen to The Tea Party in the US. They are an extremly skilled band.
