I was fortunate to sit thru 2 set s at the Five Spot when I was 18 in 59 with Monk and Coltrane ...also a NYC concert with Miles, and Mulligan.... . . t h e n in Chicago a few years later at the Sutherland Lounge again with Coltrane. What a great jazz period to grow up in! Magic times....

Thank you for that wonderfull write up on Monk! He was a true genuis but unfortunatel y he also looked cooky / strange. I was a very young teenager when he played at Town Hall in New York. If you used your ears you heard magic, if you relied mainly on your eyes... well he was often misunderstoo d .
