Tommy Emmanuel

Tommy Emmanuel, four-time winner of Australia's Best Guitarist award, has helped bring the art of rock guitar down under to a higher awareness over his two-decade-long career by bringing a sense of jazz improvisation into a mix that also includes blues, country, rock, classical, and Spanish music. After years as a popular sideman and ace songwriter, the two-time ARIA (Aussie Grammys equivalent) award winner launched his solo career in 1988 with Up from Down Under. Several releases have followed, most notably 1993's critically acclaimed The Journey, which hit high on Gavin and Radio & Records NAC airplay charts. He has shown a mastery and affinity for both electric and acoustic axes and has been singled out by the likes of notable musicians such as Chet Atkins -- with whom he recorded The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World in 1997 -- and Todd Rundgren, who considers him an innovator on the instrument. Only appeared in 2001, followed by 2002's Endless Road (it was finally released in the U.S. three years later), 2005's Live One, and 2006's Happy Hour (with Jim Nichols) and Mystery.

Although Emmanuel took a brief hiatus from the music industry at the end of 2007 for health reasons, that October he recorded all three nights of a residency at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California. These recordings would make up the acclaimed double-CD live set that was released as Center Stage in April 2008. Equally well-received was 2010’s Little by Little, a comeback of sorts in the form of a double-studio album which featured a tasteful rendition of Carole King's "Tapestry." 2011’s All I Want for Christmas nodded in places to John Fahey's classic festive recordings, while 2013’s The Colonel & The Governor saw him team up with the equally talented English guitarist Martin Taylor. ~ Jonathan Widran & James Wilkinson

Sorry Alan. Predictive text. But Tommy must be in 6 decade club by now? My apologies for misspelling your name sir... Phil Keaggy falls in the categories of decades of playing and great respect for Chet. All humble and brilliant musicians. IMHO.

Thanks Allen. If he sent a letter to Chet at age 11, and Chet was a gentleman kind enough to reply, then 2 decades just isn't enough time. I saw Tommy in a small college venue, and he cried when trying to explain his feelings for Chet Atkins. I also met a 10 year old girl with a Taylor, and Tommy had signed the case for her. She was at an even smaller venue (clinic) where Tommy heard her playing, and allowed her to play for the clinic, along with him! I see a pattern here... maybe?

a two decade long career.?.. I don't think so, do some homework please, Tommy and his brother Phil also a great guitarist were playing professional l y when they were 6 as part of the Emmanuel family, He hasn't stopped since then and has always been the consummate professional musician. I first saw him play when he was in his early 20's and he was amazing then.

Saw him twice in concert, once in Knoxville, TN and love his Australian additions to his guitar. Super talented. Fun concerts.

I've seen him play a # of shows at Winfield Bluegrass Festival and many of the players there were just speechless at what they were seeing and hearing..... . . .
To really understand what Tommy achieves with the guitar you have to see him LIVE!!!
A true master that many try to achieve and so few become.

There are many great guitarists in the world but I can think of none that top him. He can play single line runs on his dreadnought acoustic with the speed and clarity of Al Dimeola on electric then cover a chord melody that would make Joe Pass blush and he does it with childlike enthusiasm and humility. Currently number one in my book!

Arguably one of the best guitar players in the world. Unbelievable in concert. An absolute master.

I totally agree with healing harpist. I saw him on PBS - the live performance video. The fact that he can take 1 guitar & produce as many tones @ one time is un-believabl e . I can never get tied of lessoning to him. Rock-On Tommy!!

I don't say this lightly, but, in my opinion, Tommy could very well be the best guitar player in the world. He not only plays with lightning speed, but also covers the slower tunes in a way that almost makes me weep. His rendition of Over the Rainbow is something everyone should hear. I saw him live in Toronto, Ontario a few weeks ago...it was the highlight of my guitar listening career.

Relatively new to listening to his body of work and recently saw him in concert in Dearborn. Oh my word but this guy knows how to extract beautiful music out of a guitar. He is also very giving and a ton of youtube vids showing how to improve your playing. Makes me wish I worked more on finger picking, but I can still enjoy. If he gets in your area, go see him!

I've had the pleasure of seeing Tommy many times over 20 yrs and getting to meet him . He truly is the worlds finest guitarist and showman!! My father played in Chet Atkins era and would have been amazed at what Tommy has brought to the instrument!! ! Wish I had turned pops on to him before he passed. He would have been amazed. Knoppler Atkins and Gilmore were his favorites. RIP Papasan

The best, all around guitar player ever. I've seen him play rock, jazz, folk, country, classical, in addition to his own unique approach to any style of any song he plays. To the non-player his music is always pleasing, yet I wish there was some way that audience could understand all of the seemingly simple yet incredibly complex mastery he posseses. Just ask any good player to play "TICKET TO RIDE" keeping the bass riff going AND riffing effortlessly against this persistant background. Impos

he shows up in Phoenixville Pa, at the Colonial Theater from time to time, Always a sold out show!
